An old military maxim often attributed to Napoleon is “an army marches on its stomach” and I feel the same way that a university thinks via its library. The slow and steady financial diminution of research libraries and the librarians who staff them is, to me, a slow-rolling higher Ed catastrophe.

The Miramichi Fire was not the 1st #wildfire, of course, but it's usually the 1st in Canadian, North American, & even global lists of fires. With its bicentennial on 7 Oct, we'll have had 2 centuries of thinking, worrying, & writing about #forestfire.

Standing outside the gates of the Qu'Appelle Indian Residential School. This is a haunted, dark place. A 5-year-old taken through these gates had a lower chance of survival than a Canadian soldier fighting in WW2.

The red dress and the orange shirt hang on the gates.
We remember. #OrangeShirtDay

While reviewing recently collected material from the Laurier Archives, project PI Danita Burke has begun to question “was I wrong?” in her 2023 book on anti-sealing cultural violence. Here Burke discusses whether the situation has escalated to cultural & economic genocide

Crystal Fraser and I are co-editing a series on environmental histories of Indian residential and day schools for @nichecanada.bsky.social. We chose to launch the series on Orange Shirt Day, in part, to remind historians of their responsibilities to Survivors and intergenerational Survivors.
