I share a lot of jobs for agricultural, environmental, development, + regional economists via listservs. I recently moved this to a Substack to decrease listserv traffic for those folks not interested in postings + to make posts more accessible to all. Use the Search tab to filter jobs. #EconSky

That feeling when it's a cold and rainy fall day and you remember that you have hot chocolate and kahlua... I like to do your basic hot chocolate packet, boiling water, a splash of half&half, and a splash of kahlua.

Per CDC source: At internal leadership meeting this afternoon, it was shared that 1,257 people were RIF'd at CDC. Number may not be final. Apparently, chief of staff was unaware that RIFs were going to occur so not clear who is making decisions. (Short 🧵)

Hey #EconSky working in environmental econ! Looking for things to do this weekend? Why not write up a 2-3 page proposal for a cool conference-publication combo, happening in May 2025 in Washington, DC?

Submit your proposal (or paper) here by Oct 20: conference.nber.org/confsubmit/b...

Looked around to see who's working on tracking this and found this useful dashboard from @adamjst.bsky.social and @austinkocher.com of @relevantresearch.bsky.social

The thing is... We just don't know. Were they deported? Are they all still there but being kept in horrific and inhumane conditions? Have some died (either through intentional murder or unaddressed disease/neglect)? All are very bad.

The cities are getting a lot of attention (as they should!) but at the same time small actions are happening all over the place and not being aggregated up into a larger national news story by the media

Reminds me a lot of COVID deaths and how we didn't really recognize scale

I also think many more people are being taken by ICE than we realize. There was a sobering Reddit thread I saw discussed on here (now can't find it) of folks who knew people taken by ICE. It's happening everywhere + the gov't obstruction plus fractured media make it hard to see the scale of things.

I've been thinking about this a lot, especially with folks disappeared into the Florida facility that no one has heard from and no can find in the tracking system. We need to know what's happening to these folks and I fear for what we will learn when we do.

I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

I strongly urge everyone to not just read this warning from @marcwatkins.bsky.social, but heed it, and be vocal and forceful pushing back against using AI to grade student writing. This must be anathema if we're going to have a world where learning means something. substack.com/inbox/post/1...

Sending love to all the CDC folks who are experiencing a RIF today (and late Friday night a 3-day weekend, to boot). Scroll through the @altcdc.altgov.info posts from tonight to see the many affected offices. Thank you for your service. You are appreciated. We will get through this together.

Can anyone recommend an academic audiobook that was well done? Looking for a good example of how to handle citations, footnotes, bibliography, etc. in audiobook format. Ideally an academic monograph. Please only recommend if you've read the audiobook and thought it was well done.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Yep. We have a massive political machine for teaching normal people to feel shame & "oh I guess my opinions & needs are less Real & Important" because.... of not being landed gentry.

And it WORKS.

It‘s all just “decades of RW media have successfully convinced me that farmers are Real Americans and we City Folk are Not.” I have a lot of trouble escaping this mindset myself.
