“The most important ethical issue in this space is how do we get this essential, life-saving medicine to patients in low- and middle-income countries.” (Is what I said in this documentary)

The Krever Commission also “warned” against relying on imports.

As I say in the article, you can’t have it both ways: You can either pay donors or rely on imports from countries that pay donors.

No country has figured out a third option

I’m a weekly (free) plasma donor (missed last weekend for a liver conference).
A few weeks ago, a plasma product recipient came and chatted with donors. Woa that was moving. A powerful reminder for why we donate.

The EU is going to become much more dependent on the U.S. for plasma if they make donor compensation more difficult (they’re 40% so-dependent today)

Ethicists and others: What’s the best argument against donor compensation for blood plasma donation?

I feel like it’s obvious that this is okay once you know a few facts, but maybe you’ve thought about this in a way I haven’t.

If you think the point of blood and plasma donation is donor altruism and community solidarity, then you have your moral priorities confused.

The point is to meet the needs of patients
