A clip of Longcroft for #HillfortsWednesday - a complex hillfort to the east of #Oxton in the #ScottishBorders. It had 3 periods of construction that have created four ramparts with intermediate ditches. The traces of several round houses can also be seen.

The detectorists in England are also far more visible, in Scotland (& Ireland where it is illegal in most contexts) the hobby is far more private and under the radar.

Peebles, is an excellent example and there are brilliant English ones too with fantastic detectorists ... but ...

Possibly one of my favourite books

In the chaos unleashed by the October Revolution, Mikhail Bulgakov found a past become fragmented and confused, and history the domain of madmen and devils.

One book sale in seventeen days. Yikes. Help us to avoid the worst of all possible fates - the crowdfunder - by buying our scrupulously edited, meticulously designed, handsomely produced and fastidiously packaged books here:

By privilege I mean: English man in his castle, the god given right, the I'm alright Jack side hustle, the finders keepers, the gollum it's my precious, the it's not fair, look at me I'm a heritage hero, I deserve this - all of it the praise / press / adulation, I want to be famous, you work for me

The 'privilege' of the metal detecting community is something I've never understood and its to do with British culture (me me me / youre trying to take advantage), working alongside detectorists from Scandinavian countries you see a different attitude to finds & cultural / communal ownership.

That would be amazing happy to pass on John's contact details, apparently their 2nd violin player has had a nasty accident and severed tendon in her thumb which has put her out of action. They are a fun group playing a nice repotoire

Let's hope the artefacts are recovered swiftly

Fascinating- would they be for wax impressions, stone seems such an odd medium when you could just cut a wood block or etch a brass sheet with better results.

I stopped on my commute home last night to take time with a view. A hare and a red kite were my only witnesses as the traffic thundered over my shoulder. Sometimes, making and taking little spaces of time have unexpected consequences - it's just about giving yourself the permission to say that's OK

It could be this is the lid and the opposing face is more deeply cut. Just thoughts, this sort of thing:

Anything stolen is a horrendous national crime for Wales ... just wish it wasn't happening at such a good display of national culture

Because it's like someone stealing the sun, the love and the soul of a remembered community.

To think it could be reduced to a puddle of gold weighed in for its monetary value.

It's all beyond words

Is this what has been taken from St Fagans, if so devastating, a jewel of Welsh material culture and so very delicate

I'm not convinced it's a lithograph plate, it looks more to create copies through casting and the peg holes are typical of moulds. I assume a second plate and the gunnels / channels in which the casting alloy flowed.

🚴John Betjeman said that it was worth cycling 40 miles in a headwind to see them.
🪽The early C16th Angel Roof at St Wendreda in Cambs is adorned with over 100 oaken angels.
View along the nave of St. Wendreda’s Church, March, showing the magnificent medieval angel roof with carved wooden angels soaring above the slender stone arcades.
