I make Dad jokes on NPR and also write books and other things.

If you read Maggie Haberman's excellent biography of him Confidence Man, you can extend it back through his entire life. (Though his energy etc has diminished with age).

No worries.

I think you have severely misread my post. May I suggest trying again?

That's more or less my point.

Here's a case I think about: a baseball player so gifted he could have made the Hall of Fame. Who had dozens of people and institutions rooting for him, helping him, giving him additional chance after additional chance... and he still couldn't beat it.

We all know people who tried the damndest to get sober, who managed for a while, who relapsed, even though the cost was unimaginable. We can't judge, and we can't condemn. We can only express the deepest sympathy for those who struggle, and for those who fail, and for all those who pay the price.

As a society, we're much, much more sympathetic to addicts and addiction than we used to be. But we still fall into the belief once a person goes into recovery, they're fine (this is sometimes a narrative pushed by the addicts themselves.) But that is not always, or even most often, the case.

This is also an excuse to post one of my fave news clips of all time. Right after the decision was handed down, David Boies (one of the lawyers who won) went on CBS news with a prominent bigot and ripped him to shreds. “The witness stand is a lonely place to lie.”

That case headed to SCOTUS and many thought it would be the basis of national marriage equality; that ended up being another case, “Obergefell.” But reading Walker’s decision shows how strong the arguments for SSM are, and how weak the arguments against it are.

The lawsuit he funded, filed by the two superstar lawyers he recruited on behalf of plaintiffs he found, led to (IMHO) the best, most well grounded and irrefutable legal opinion justifying marriage equality: Judge Vaughn Walker’s decision in the case ultimately known as “Hollingsworth v Perry.”

Apparently I was too subtle. This article is a RW attempt to do a “Fox News Stole My Dad” story
