Birdoswald farm with its faux crenellations was built in the 19th century but it sits within the Roman fort of Banna on Hadrian’s Wall. The west wall with its interval tower can be seen in the foreground. Originally built of Turf and timber the fort was rebuilt in stone #archaeology #hadrianswall

One of the most scenic Roman roads in Britain runs from the fort at Burrow fort north to the fort at Low Borrowbridge in the lune gorge running along the slopes of the Howgill fells in Cumbria. The shot shows the road passing Low Carlingill farm. The road continues up to the Eden Valle #Margary7c

It’s worth a 5 minute walk west of the village car park in #Corbridge to see the Roman bridge stones which carried Dere Street over the river Tyne. The stones have been moved from their excavation site to better protect and display then.

“The canton of the Durotriges of Lendiniae”a building stone from #HadriansWall mentioning the British tribe of the Durotriges based around Dorset inscribed on a reused altar. These Civitas stones survive showing the tribes of Britain contributed to the rebuilding of the wall.

A building stone of the 1st Cohort of Tungrians found in the granary wall at Housesteads fort. The stone is upside down indicating it was reused here when the building was divided into two. The tungrians came from the area which now covers east Belgium. #RIB3326 #hadrianswall #archaeology

The Housesteads chap, another good luck symbol carved into the late Bath house wall within the fort. Very hard to see in bright sunlight so a sidelight on a winters day does the trick #hadrianswall #archaeology

Looking west at Brocolitia fort at on #HadriansWall. The wall runs under the military road but the north ditch is visible. The fort was a later build created to fill a gap between Housesteads and Chesters fort as evidenced by the vallum which was filled in and the fort built over the top.
