Does science diplomacy include giving scientists 'a seat at the table'? If so, to do what and with what implications?

On Sept. 30, 1958, Canadian children were treated to a new show.
It featured a giant who told them to "look up!...waaaaaay up!"
For the next 27 years, the show was a fixture on CBC and is beloved to this day.
This is the story of The Friendly Giant!

🧵 1/12
Bob Homme as The Friendly Giant, wearing a rustic, beige tunic with brown accents, holding a small xylophone and two violins, with a colorful giraffe puppet with a harmonica and a chicken puppet on his shoulders, set against a plain blue background.

According to data provided by Statscan to the OECD, Canada's tertiary education system is experiencing BY FAR the fastest public disinvestment of any country in the developed world. (I am not sure the specific figures are 100% accurate, but the conclusion is still irrefutable)

Rather than just say “political will” better to frame it as what are the conditions and factors that lead governments to successfully address complex health problems. What does this mean for TB? At least this gives a menu of things to do rather than trying to generate undefined political will.
pfafard.bsky.social
Let’s assume that we know what it would take to reduce or eliminate TB IN Canada’s North - probably a complex set of actions to address housing, poverty, food security, etc. It would also pr require some complex community engagement with Inuit communities. In short, doable but not necessarily quick.
pfafard.bsky.social
Saying that something is a matter of "political will" sounds plausible. But what does it mean in practical terms?

What, probably difficult choices - about funding, about creating capacity, about jurisdiction - must finally be made that earlier groups of politicians were unwilling to make?

End of summer sale at Stanford University Press, which means the Dave/ @plagasse.bsky.social and Steve book is now just $37.50. And it is thick, so the $/page is low, kind of like how Estonia's defence spending is high since their GDP is low. Woot!! www.sup.org/books/politi...
