Nestled in the St. Paul’s library and suddenly *overcome* by a sense of loss for...card catalogues??

I miss the tactile, the full physicality of library life. I miss being hidden in stacks. I miss dust. I miss random learned-looking spiders. I miss the smell of old paper. Paper made learning sexy.

Ah, the snail children. Take years off our lives.

Every day is a good day for reading Heine.

Ludwig Börne offering to spy on himself for half the price the police spy is being paid. (From Heinrich Heine’s book on Börne.)

And yet he knew that he was surrounded by spies, and he once said to me, "there's a fellow walking constantly behind me, following me through all the streets, standing in front of all the buildings I go into, and certainly is well paid by some government for it. If I only knew which government, I would write to it to say that I should like to earn the money myself, that I myself would submit a reliable daily report about how I had spent the whole day, with whom I had spoken, where I had gone; yes, I am ready to deliver this report at a much cheaper price,

In my already super neighbourly area, COVID only brought out more mutual care. Kids walk to school together. People greet crossing guards (who have treats for 🐕) by name. Those few in cars make room: for 👧🚲&🚙. My brother in Utah finds the difference in felt community so stark he wants to move home.

Watching antisocial driver behavior in the school drop-off line makes it really clear that the pandemic destroyed whatever few shreds remained of the social compact, just pathological selfishness on display every day

Mike Johnson’s position is young pregnant American women shouldn’t have to wait before being turned away to die in the parking lot from an ectopic pregnancy the hospital is afraid to treat

Mike Johnson: "If you're a young, pregnant American citizen women who shows up in an ER and you get treated and they pay the hospital less for treating you than some illegal rabble rouser who came in from some South American country to do us harm, that is wrong."

i have met a number of pigs, including pigs i later went on to eat (we have small farmers in our family) and quite frankly, getting to know pigs has made me feel even less bad about eating them

they would 100% eat us if given the chance

This comprehensive new compendium on constitutional theory is fantastic. (And not JUST because I have a chapter on constitutional legitimacy in it 😁). @rbellamy.bsky.social and Jeff King have done a huge service to students and to the profession. The culmination of many years of effort.

We set different ages for kids to exercise different freedoms for good reason. (See @alixabeth.bsky.social ’s important work.) In my jurisdiction, kids get control over their medical records and treatment from 12, & this seems like a good age for parents to mix out of book choices too. 6? Less so.

My feelings about Banned Books Week are that no indeedy parents do NOT have the right to decide what their own children read, because children are human beings with the right to dignity and privacy.

Agreeing w the parents rights premise shifts the Overton window in the wrong ass direction.

Many are still analysing politics through the lens of old cleavages & w/ dated assumptions. Yet, we can’t work out new analytical tools until more data accumulates. Seems to me poli.scientists are flying a bit blind for now.
(Meanwhile, a new push to lower voting age is left driven 🤷‍♀️)

October 5: Apologies for the bad news, but today is one of the 3 unluckiest days of the year in the Roman calendar. Definitely let people know that the underworld opens up to the living today (mundus patet) and so you just can’t leave your house, especially to sail (also on August 24 & November 8).
The tomb was designated the “Tomb of Cerberus” after the incredible mural of Hercules fighting the three-headed dog that guarded the underworld.
