Lesson 8: Ask tough questions early on: For example, what would you want to achieve in your life? Where do you see yourself in like 20 years? Would you be happier with the current trajectory/ career? What would you like to do when you are at 50?
Have you tried X/Twitter? It is always fun over there!
Worth considering that one reason Bluesky doesn't always feel super fun is that current events are relentlessly horrifying and bad

Lol! Who would have thought!?

I agree with most of it. While 2000IU per day is suitable for most, if you have been deficient in vit. D, you will need larger doses for the first few weeks. I don't know why doctors do not recommend vit. D enough, as it fixes a large amount of issues!

Dear PhDs and postdocs: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! This includes even negative results or things that seem very minor such as optimizing protocols. This will help you substantially during discussions with your supervisors, during interviews and also increase clarity of thoughts.

I agree. Also, vitamin D really helps with depression, fatigue and brain fog.
Listen to me y’all: Always fit a protein into your depression meals.

ALWAYS

Plant-based, animal, idc. Your brain NEEDS protein to deal with what you are dealing with

If you are dealing with triggers & traumas, put a protein in all your meals to reduce the cortisol (stress hormone) in your body

Totally agree! I am still in shock to see the kind of attacks to silence views coming from scientists from prestigious universities. Given this, how can one trust their science?
February 2, 2025 at 10:33 AM
It is clear from being in bsky that scientists here are highly disconnected from reality and the needs of a common person. If this same attitude continues, then I won't be surprised to see even further decline! Academic science is dying!
It’s a major surprise to me that this is the first time it’s happened.

The methodology in defining a
top scientist was to look at the authors of the most cited papers in 129 scientific journals.

Since 2020, the number of U.S. top scientists has declined by 14% while it’s up by 77% in China.
China overtakes US in number of top scientists, signalling global talent shift
While the number of leading scientists in America is falling, the number in China is only going up, according to new data.

No wonder people are losing trust in science, believe climate change is a hoax and don't trust vaccines. Clearly, scientists here on bsky are highly disconnected from the reality of a common person and basically how the world works. No one is going to read your papers, Academic science is dying.

PhD dominates your life leaving no room for social life. Do not let that happen. You will need your personal/ social life as well as time to plan/ take care of your health.
Has anyone seen my social life? I can’t find it anywhere.

It is like I am talking to walls! I keep getting attacked for absolutely no reason. No one is trying to explain why they believe what they believe!
Why does everyone here seem so upset and frustrated? I am a regular person who loves to exchange ideas and it seems like I am walking on egg shells here! Gosh, grow up!

Yes, that some is an exception and not a rule!
Next up: hormones. You think testosterone = male and estrogen = female? LOL. Nope.

Some women have more testosterone than some men, and vice versa. Hormones are all over the map. Your “biological sex” argument is collapsing faster than Trump’s legal defenses.

This is false!
One last thing – even biologists avoid letting students look at their own chromosomes in class.

Why? Because they might learn their chromosomal sex doesn’t match their physical sex. Imagine finding that out during a pop quiz. And yet, you think you’re an expert? Sit down.

Lesson 6: Stay ahead of the curve. Practice agility, Nimbleness. They will serve you for long and you will naturally succeed in any path you take.

A few of the most important qualities you will develop as a PhD student are: perseverance, resilience, humility, gratitude, and persistence. Learn to sell these qualities during your interviews.
February 1, 2025 at 12:39 PM
I disagree! Scientists, of all people, should be involved in politics. What you are seeing in EU is the result of scientists avoiding politics!
Shout out to all the fuckwits who told me, two months ago, that scientists must strive to remain apolitical.

They already did 3, 4 for years and look where they are now! People can't even afford food!

If I were Canadian PM I would immediately:

1. Create a new $15B science fund

2. Offer any credentialed US scientist funding for lab startup and replacement of NIH grants if they move to Canada

3. Immediate permanent residency

4. Citizenship after 2 years

Overnight a science superpower

And yet, everyone are sleeping on this! Why are so-called big shots not doing anything about it?
January 31, 2025 at 6:40 PM
Spend more time in the lab doing bench work if you want to get good at it! Spend more time writing your manuscript if you want to get good at it. Spend more time writing cover letters and learning about them if you want to get good at it! There are tips and tricks but no shortcut.

It is a wake up call to PhDs: if your PhD is not in an area that has direct societal/ industrial impact then you won't get a job! It is as simple as that. So, be careful what subject you choose and if the place/ lab has good networks with industries. Be smart and agile!

Lesson 5: Limited multitasking - If you are reading papers to formulate the hypothesis, take your time to read the most important papers and make 5 sentence summaries. This will help you later on during writing a paper or thesis.
