I've started doing this in the past few days as well. A good sign.

I was (unfortunately) went on The Express website earlier and found the same sort of message. Is this even legal?

What about I deleted the app from my phone and don't want to give it the time necessary to log back in and delete my account?

I don't think it is.

Yes, I agree. I can understand the benefits of not introducing verification for all celebrities, but I think politicians and government figures especially need that sort of verification mark, not least to make them confident to use the platform.

For instance, if Keir Starmer were to join, he could put @keirstarmer.com as his handle, and then a verification mark would appear below his name that says "☑️ Keir Starmer MP" or something & when @kierstarmer.com or 'starmer.bsky.social' try to post, then they wouldn't have that very visible mark.

Yes, you can check, but if Bluesky is to become a major platform, most realistically won't. I do think it has its merits, but it needs to sit alongside a system of verification where a celebrity or public figure's user name is checked against their domain handle and given some sort of mark.

The problem remains that it relies on people knowing that Nigella's website is nigella.com and not, say, nigellalawson.com or nigella.co.uk. Yes, it's better than the handle "nigella.bsky.social", which anyone could have, but it isn't verification.

Coming into Poole Harbour at sunset was amazing, especially watching the sun set falling in the sky as the English coastline neared. Would definitely recommend if you are going to the Channel Islands or France to try and get a ferry back that comes in at around 9pm (in June)!

@jessphillipsmp.bsky.social politicians need to be doing this!

One at Grosnez, Jersey and one at Poole Harbour, both one day apart.

Just listened to the latest podcast, looking forward to hearing more coverage from you over the next week as we find out about the "for the few, for the past" platform!

To get onto Bluesky

My suggestion would simply be that an domain as a whole can become verified as the domain for that website, and then a description in blue of who that account belongs to would appear below.

E.g. [email protected] would have 'UK Government Account' below it, but @ukprimeminister.com would not.
August 18, 2024 at 10:24 PM
I would suggest it still needs a layer of verification, such as a tick, as people aren't guaranteed to know about this form of verification, and it's open to abuse. For instance, kierstarmer.com is an available website. Someone might use it to impersonate Keir Starmer, who owns keirstarmer.com.
kierstarmer.com
This domain may be for sale!

And the top replies on every tweet being from anonymous but verified, i.e. paid-up, users who were almost always posting something mildly fascist. Including on random unrelated memes.

In the weeks before leaving, I found myself blocking or muting more accounts than I was actually interested in.
