My protagonist has been pursuing these goals as long as she can remember, just not effectively. Her economic status is an insurmountable barrier stopping her from making any real progress. The antagonist's offer is the first real chance she's ever had (he's wealthy, famous, influential). #PlotTober

8. What are some potential reasons the main character(s) haven't, couldn't, and/or can't pursue these goals yet? Consider other characters, backstory events, circumstances, environmental factors, etc.

"What was poison before, ended up being for the best.
From a treasonous heart, made of metal.
If you’re a good warrior, you’ll know I still love you
And that I'm now immortal of your venom.
(I'm immortal, I'm immortal)"

This is how I hope her arc works out 😅

Fingers crossed 🤞 I think it's especially detrimental in the arts and humanities, where you have to take risks to create and where it's kind of important to be able to fail productively, if that makes any sense? Creation just doesn't work if you make people afraid of taking risks/doubt themselves.
philosophika.bsky.social
Yep 😅 Haha, I feel like I'm in feedback rehab.

Yes!!! We were taught it was a compliment if people tried to take you down; that the fact people were willing to destroy you in a seminar session/panel/etc. showed that your work and ideas were worth engaging with. The more aggressive and intense the attack, the higher the compliment. It was insane.

I'm starting to think Unis need to rethink their approach to teaching 😅 I'm sorry you also suffer from the horrible self-doubt. It's such a pain! So unnecessary, too!
philosophika.bsky.social
however, it's more about the intellectual challenge. She likes how difficult and obscure it is. 😅 Loves excelling at it. Loves taking risks in her experiments. Loves the point where it's less science and more mysticism. Fingers crossed I'm able to convey that on the page! 😅

She fell in love with it as a kid when her father took her to one of the antagonist's lectures/demonstrations. It was the wonder of seeing something transformed into something else on stage and then hearing about the mystery of the philosopher's stone that initially drew her to it ✨ As an adult →

I feel like Aine and my MC would get on 😅 (Also rooting for Bear, of course!)

"Facts are a comfort" <- I'm going to need this on a t-shirt. Your MC sounds fantastic! Can't wait to learn more about her.
philosophika.bsky.social
I'm sorry, but I love these two so much at this point 😂 Poor things!
philosophika.bsky.social
Damn, I'm rooting for her already! 🥹

That doesn't mean these goals are easy to pursue; she has had to give up the life she had begun cultivating back home (friends, the love of her life, etc) to go after them. It's a hard choice to make, but the only one that promises freedom at the end. She has had to be ruthless w/ herself.
philosophika.bsky.social
The protagonist wants to save her family from poverty b/c (1) she loves them & (2) she's never going to be able to pursue her own interests if she's always scrounging for cash to keep everyone alive. She wants a career in alchemy b/c she wants a chance to be herself/ a stable future. #PlotTober

7. Now that you've come up with some goals for your main character, ask yourself: why do they care? What are some potential motivations for pursuing these goals, even against their better judgment or self-interest?

It's funny how little one actually needs confidence 🤣 Pretend confidence works almost as well? Fake it till you make it, haha. Thank you, btw ^^

Oh yeah, I have a new book out! A goofy horror comedy/ homage to campy horror movies, right on time for Halloween season! 🎃

I say this as the top of my class, graduated with hons, etc, btw. Any point/accolade I was granted had to be torn from the hands of my adversarial professors/peers. It's the gladiatorial side of phil. It's so savage that even winning leaves you maimed!

The self doubt. I realized the other day when I received feedback on a Dev. Editing assignment that it was the first time in 16 years someone had written something overtly positive on the side of my text. 16 years!!! Studying philosophy was brutal on my confidence 😅 #WritingLifeMonthly

😅 I hear you! It can be hard to find the time. I listen to audiobooks a lot these days. Actually, I had the (mis)fortune of having my dishwasher break down a couple of weeks ago, so I've had an excuse to just listen for ages while I wash the dishes 😂 (And slow reading is the best kind of reading!)
philosophika.bsky.social
You know what, if I was on the fence before, I'm not on it anymore. That sounds ✨exactly✨ like something I'd enjoy... I love unlikeable characters (they're much more interesting imo). I'm going to add it to my next reads. Thanks for the recommendation!
philosophika.bsky.social
Yes, omg!!! 💜 I was completely blown away by Human Acts. It's like nothing else I've ever read!
philosophika.bsky.social
They are 💜 I really enjoyed them! I think "Human Acts" is probably the best out of all of them (no surprises there, I guess haha). But "Plato and the Tyrant" was also eye-opening. I had no idea Plato had been sold into slavery at one point, for example!
