me, internally, whenever someone says something like that:
"lol, if only you knew what happens at hacker con hotels, and what I've heard second-hand from hotel housekeeping staff about the doctors and dentists."

but all that aside: I never got invited to those kinda parties because I wasn't the hookup type *shrug* Usually had a partner on my arm, usually one I was in a long term committed relationship with. Hookup culture was big in my area and apparently couples harsh the vibe?

point is, yeah people do it, but there are a scary number of bugchasers and "givers" who go to those kind of parties and get invited due to status in the scene or raw charisma, but are ultimately dangerous to the group. It's a predators go where the sheep are kinda thing.

With my 'used to help run furry cons' hat on.. those are legitimate worries in those spaces, moreso than outside (IME).
Vetting tends to be poorer, and there are a lot of broken stairs, and a harsh victim-blaming culture. You could have been talking to someone who'd had a bad experience.

I suspect (based on corporate PR assumptions) they'll try to keep it as quiet as possible.

“Every word of hatred, direct or disguised, contributes to attacks, violence and a culture of fear for our community in public spaces.

"I hope Keir Starmer remembers the outrage he felt about the attack on his family next time he gets up to speak on LGBTQIA+ issues in parliament.”
Starmer "furious" at homophobic attack on his family, as if his party has nothing to do with it
Since a homophobic attack on his niece, his party has introduced multiple anti-LGBTQIA+ policies and the UK has fallen steeply in human rights rankings

2/ What’s happened since?

Since that attack - and since Starmer became PM - he has overseen policies that have fuelled hostility towards our community, especially Trans+ people.

Here’s just a few 👇🧵

I used to know people who had venue or travel status (frequent flyer type stuff) through running or attending furry events, and many wanted to keep the benefits to a crazy degree. There's a lot of quid pro quo too. People keep extensive burn books and dossiers on each other, like some politicians do

I had that discussion with a couple of UK con and meet organisers ages ago and at least one of them did see it that way. But mostly in my experience it was either chasing attendance numbers (trying to be bigger than other cons), "furries don't discriminate, That's Bad" or "Keep Furry Weird".

The biggest problem with it is what Skipai and Patter hinted at: kids stand up to the bully, then they're expelled. Because the bully's only acting how they were taught to by their parents, and they're going to be Very Scary. And by and large, headteachers don't want to deal with that. Cue DARVO.

ouch, but also: right on the money.
December 1, 2025 at 3:07 PM
"We know this is an issue, but frankly the bully and his parents are very involved in the local community so there's very little I can do..." (aka: they're assholes and I'm scared of doing my job), as the headmistress at one of my schools put it.

Yeah I just felt I had to be upfront about how that guy was a problem for multiple cons so nobody thought it was just an MFF problem. The root of it was nobody wanted to be the first to take action, after that the public distancings and PR statements and "hey I told you last year" tweets avalanched.

At least it'd be an honest explanation for a 200% price hike.

Who knows, maybe chaos is the only thing we have left in this mad world. Not dunking on that con, obviously people like it enough to buy tickets.

I'd joke about this being the perfect con for edgy social media antics, but there is that con in the US (I want to say Philly?) who run theirs like they just got hired writing for South Park.

This might be the one and only time a furry con *not* using a human artist to do their artwork is not just funny, but part of the joke. (in any other situation, it's a dick move)

"We give so few hoots, we didn't even make sure we spelled 'nihilist' right on the badge. Oh yeah and we did this with ChatGPT".

"Survival Skills for a Collapsing Society" - because acrylic-fibre faux fur sure isn't edible.

We can even have some fun events.

"Fursuit Into the Void", learn how to dance in the fursuit you spent more on than your car, while contemplating your fleeting existence.

"Existential Parade" – March through the city pretending your $150 fox tail and plastic badge makes you bigger than King Julien
