Concept art is rarely a process of, "have cool idea, now just visualize it for me!"
Its a process of education, discovery and development to make "believable", original, workable objects that make sense.

I'm primarily ebook, and then if i really like it i'll buy the print as well

tho it's less of a gamble with your books so even if it was print only it wouldn't put me off :)

hitting that sweet spot also naturally helps with your pacing. enough visualisation to give the scene a time and a place, but not enough to veer into purple prose territory or otherwise drag on.

so it's a good spot to aim for in general :)

it's definitely a trip when real life gets ahead of genre fiction 😅

i remember this happening in the early aughts with cyberpunk authors moving to writing contemp thrillers because it wasn't fictional anymore. so you're in good company there

there's so many stories like this, of pubs not doing what was in the contract or demanding the author do things out of pocket.

one of the reasons i was never interested in going trad. if i'm going to have to do the work myself, may as well just be indie and keep control and make more money per sale

Trad pub can be such a poisoned chalice these days :(
