While many of my games don't take themselves seriously, there's a place for more serious or darker tones. Like many things, it's a group concern and something that everyone should agree to at the beginning of the game.

I think the Dems should hold town halls across the country. Invite the people to come to hear them speak. Send surrogates to speak in red districts, holding town halls where their reps are afraid to do so.

Addendum: if your players ask if something specific is in the room, default to yes if it makes sense. They're probably trying to come up with something cool.

I love it. That would be wonderful on a random encounter table while in the wilderness. Of course, what counts as "the high temple" may be irksome if the party is en route to the Dangerous Dungeon of Doom, but the High Temple is two weeks back the other direction.

I love tension mechanics. They can really help push a game forward by forcing the players to make a choice. It can also add to the drama of the situation.
