Here's a crazy idea: let's stop pretending that institutions under capitalism can be changed for the better; it's time to focus on mutual aid, solidarity, self-governance and community. Let's build ephemeral utopias.
Fats Waller: adventure cat at large.
Today in trail training, we attempted Dragon's Tooth in Catawba Valley. Only made it halfway, but she made great progress learning to share the trail with humans and dogs. Next time, she'll make it.

Right anatomy--the feelers especially...but somehow still doesn't look right to me.

Warning to hikers on the AT! A man-eating tabby cat was spotted today hunting from the canopy. Quercus Montana provide perfect cover for cat pouncing and bug eating. #trailcat #caturday

When Flora guides disagree and contradict, what do my fellow naturalists do? Salicornia/Salcocornia is a beautiful example of disputed taxonomy.

Early autumn colors of ridgetop oak, buckeye and hemlock forests. We discovered that the strips of early yellow that appear in August halfway up the Blue Ridge slopes arejust buckeye. Doing what buckeye does. And beneith them, autumn blooms. www.inaturalist.org/observations... 🌿🌍

Guys, remember when Aang refused to kill Fire Lord Ozai? That moment changed me forever. I can't stop thinking about it.

On one hand, would I refuse playing football with a dictator's head? Probably not.

On the other, I want to find a way to just take away their bending powers, Aang-style

Late-wave Caterpillar season in the mountains! This is just from looking at the fuzzy wiggler. She never even tasted him. www.inaturalist.org/observations... #caturday #adventurecat

Datana? Anyone familiar with Prominent moths? Kitty is definitely entertained by them. Between the bitter taste, coloration, wiggliness and spikiness, they have a puzzling allure. No worries I did not allow any harm to the worm. 🌿 #caturday #catsofbluesky www.inaturalist.org/observations...

Among others of her many skills, Fats Waller is proficient at helping me with ecology field work, herbaria sample collection and observing long-term effects of landscape fire on species composition #researchcat #queerinstem #catsofbluesky www.inaturalist.org/observations...

It's been rainy, so Fats has been getting stir crazy without our usual hikes and this North American bug mobile I made was like catnip for her. I painted each #nativespecies in #watercolor

Fats the cat explored Dogtown, MA with me for #caturday. We encountered more ticks than dogs, and of the many poisonous fruits like buckthorn, maianthemum and lily of the valley, we only chewed on a few. No stomach upset yet. #adventurecat #capeann #catsofbluesky

My four-month-old loves the forest. Her demeanor lights up the moment we are under the canopy with ants to chase and trees to claw up. #catsofbluesky #adventurecat #sheltercat

I can find many ways to procrastinate. My favorite lately was by embelishing this cigarette case as a modern spin on the Lascaux bird man. Setting has a strong influence on the entranced mindset, and to honor that, this case is a nod to early ritual cave sites

It's little wonder June is so popular for weddings when even the flowers dress in white. Fats the cat helped me hunt down these ridgetop brides.

Compersion, a word worth knowing, a practice worth your familiarity. Unlike these strange creatures for whom we woke at dawn to poke and prod. The brainless among them forgave or forgot our meddling. I pity the others, the fish, tossed about constantly by acidified seas and by curious terrestrials

Small whorled pogonia is an endangered terrestrial orchid in Appalachia. Fire history here is rich and variable. Fire return intervals range from 3 to 500 years at different populations. I am studying this orchid's fire tolerance. Fire can be vitally important to plant conservation. 🌾🧪 #nativeplants
