“It is the return of the sun,
Of my exiled ones
And for her sake, and his
I swear
I shall not compromise
And to the last pulse in my veins
I shall resist,
Resist—and resist.”

From Sameeh Al-Qassem’s “Enemy of the Sun”. A handwritten copy of the poem found was found in George Jackson’s cell.

In the intertwined histories of this book, and in the unyielding political edge of the poems themselves, is a long story of solidarity between oppressed peoples: from Palestine to South Africa to Algeria to Vietnam to the United States.
DEFIANCE
You may fasten my chains
Deprive me of my books and tobacco
You may fill my mouth with earth
Poetry will feed my heart, like blood
It is salt to the bread
And liquid to the eye
I will write it with nails, eye sockets and daggers
I will recite it in my prison cell—
In the bathroom—
    In the stable—
        Under the whip—
            Under the chains—
                In spite of my handcuffs
I have a million nightingales
On the branches of my heart
Singing the song of liberation.

But Jackson never wrote the poem; it was authored by the Palestinian poet Sameeh Al-Qassem and published in this anthology a year before Jackson’s murder. This limited edition broadside of the poem is part of the long story of solidarity between oppressed peoples.

In 1971, in the wake of George Jackson’s killing by San Quentin prison guards, a poem entitled “Enemy of the Sun” was found among ninety-nine books in the revolutionary’s cell. The handwritten poem was mistakenly attributed to him and published in Black Panther newspapers.

Their playful style & uncompromising anti-imperialist & anticapitalist politics have inspired artists around the world, & their emphasis on utilitarian uses of art for celebration, decoration, information, argumentation, rumination, & persuasuion reminds us we must fight for bread, & roses too.
