This is a key piece of the attacks we’re seeing on all levels of education: A public that distrusts teachers and professors is a public that is primed to allow government leaders to divert public funds—meaning taxes—towards tech billionaires and their questionable products.
jessicacalarco.com
Fueling distrust in teachers--particularly among vulnerable students--might also be by design. Because tech companies have a great deal to gain financially if they can persuade families and policymakers that AI can replace teachers in struggling public schools. 3/

The govt, at time of writing, yet maintains its felony assault complaints against two other men arrested at the 9/27 ICE facility protest:

Dana Briggs, who is 70 years old, and Paul Ivery, who has an intellectual disability and was asked, while in federal custody, to waive his Miranda rights.

New: the federal government has dropped its case against Ray Collins and Jocelyne Robledo, a couple who had faced felony charges for allegedly assaulting federal agents during a protest outside the Broadview ICE facility on Sept. 27.

The govt moved to drop its complaint against them this morning.

Great new investigative piece showing how the new Cook County prosecutor has weakened the conviction integrity unit - even as concerns mount over the pressure tactics of a former Chicago detective, with the reporter finding evidence of 24 cases with coercion allegations:

The admin’s efforts to get universities to agree to a list of demands in exchange for preferential access to federal funding isn’t just “troubling” as Ted Mitchell, prez of the @aceducation.bsky.social says in this article; it looks blatantly unconstitutional.🧵

When a state or local law enforcement official violates your rights, you can sue for money damages. When a federal official violates your rights — you largely cannot, thanks to a quirk of the law and the Supreme Court's decision not to find an inherent cause of action to sue under the Constitution.

What are the legal options here, either for the individuals or local/state officials? Can they sue? Can someone be prosecuted?

Surreal moment for America. Needless to say, if the normal police ever pulled something like this — pulling every single person out of an apartment building and handcuffing them to run warrant checks — they would be sued into oblivion.

Yet ICE is going to get away with it entirely.
"It was scary, because I had never had a gun in my face," Fisher said. "They asked my name and my date of birth and asked me, did I have any warrants? And I told them, 'No, 'Ididn't."
Fisher said she was handcuffed before being released around 3 a.m., and she was told that if anyone had any kind of warrant out for them, even if it was unrelated to immigration, they would not be released.

What DHS pulled in Chicago on Tuesday is wildly unconstitutional. They smashed down almost every door in the building, dragged entire families into the street, and detained people for hours ("Kavanaugh stops").

Ms. Fisher was held for five hours and another senior citizen was held for three hours.
Rodrick Johnson, 67, is one of many residents who were detained by federal agents during the South Shore raid. A U.S. citizen, he said agents broke through his door and dragged him out in zip ties.

Johnson said he was left tied up outside the building for nearly three hours before agents finally let him go.

“I asked [agents] why they were holding me if I was an American citizen, and they said I had to wait until they looked me up,” Jones said. “I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer. They never brought one.”

yeah, this is hegseth straightforwardly announcing that it is free play time for bigots in the ranks. and together with his comments on standards, he clearly wants to purge as many women, black and brown people as he can from the armed services. a white man's military.

Hegseth: "We are overhauling an inspector general process that has been weaponized, putting complainers and poor performers in the driver seat. We are doing the same with the equal opportunity policies. No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complains ... no more walking on eggshells."

Genuinely curious what the impetus was for this. It produces a lot of misery for immigrants, sure, but also immense misery for Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, Google, JP Morgan, Oracle, Intel (now partly owned by the US 🙄), and Tesla, all of whom have lots of H-1Bs and international operations.

We haven’t seen the text of this yet, but to be clear, the president has literally zero legal authority to impose a $100,000 fee on visas. None. Zip. Zilch.

The only authority Congress has ever given the executive branch here is to charge fees to recover the cost of processing the application.

Grateful for the opportunity to write about the history of GI resistance - a history that is critical to remember in this moment of increased state violence and repression. Shout out to Aaron Hughes for co-writing this piece with me.

Yeah man, if you’re heading out to a protest these days, assume you are being surveilled and act accordingly. Images and video that you didn’t know were taken will end up in indictments, fusion center reports, and any other intelligence file they got

This is not unusual! The warrants are pretext to get inside the facility without warning. In the 2018 Tennessee raid, they similarly had a limited warrant for investigating the company for hiring practices, burst in, and ordered all the Latinos to line up. tennesseelookout.com/2022/09/05/f...
