Dusted downstairs and also embroidered today. It was 9º below today. It didn't warm up at all. Went to bed at 9:00.

Marg, Erw, & I went up town today. We saw quite a few people we knew. Went to the toboggan party at J. Franzmeiers but it was too stormy. Marg & Er went too. Went to bed at 1:00

Otto Jr. was born in Germany in 1882. He emigrated here in 1887 with his parents and two younger brothers. The other seven siblings were born in Minnesota. This photo of Otto, his father and siblings is likely from around the time of the diary. Otto is on the right. His mother died in 1926.

It was Pa's 54th birthday today. Marg & Erwin came up & brought him a cake. Mother made me pajamas today. Retired about 9:15.

We had Eddie Johnson saw our wood today. Erwin, Oscar, & Uncle Adolph helped us. Cleaned upstairs & down. Retired at 8:45.

I presume the order was from Sears. On page 15 of the 1935 Sears Christmas Book, you could order a 'Famous Gold Star' toy for 79¢

We got our order today. Bob got a Gold Star game, I got pajama goods. Marg & Erwin came with the sled tonight. Retired around 9:00.

It snowed heavily all day today. I made 12 quilt blocks today. Played rummy after supper and retired at 9:00.

Although there were many, many Volkerts in Dakota County at the time, this was the only mention of Carl in the diary. I haven't been able to 100% verify that this is the same guy but seven years later he quite possibly threatened to shoot Governor Harold Stassen!

Marguerite was her sister (age 21) who married Erwin in 1934. The Oxford Ballroom is now a mini strip-mall (Oxford Square) on Grand Ave

Sunday, January 5, 1936:
Went to church as usual. Marg & Erwin were here for dinner. Played whist in the afternoon. Went roller skating at the Oxford Ballroom in St. Paul. Got home at 12:30. Went in Carl Volkert's new car.

Mother & the boys went to town today. I cleaned the downstairs and scrubbed the kitchen. I got a new underskirt & fancy work from Mother.

It is blizzardy out today. Went to W.L. meeting and took Eileen along. We had a long meeting. Got home at 12:00 and it was still blowing.
