Portland Public Schools prepared & empowered Jan 16, 2026 Dear Portland Public Schools Community: As we begin a long weekend that will conclude with the Monday, Jan 19 holiday to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., many in our community may find it hard to feel celebratory due to stress and fear about upcoming anticipated actions in Maine by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I want you to know that we at The Portland Public Schools are doing all we can to be responsive to concerns raised by community members and to keep our students and staff safe. While we still don't know any specifics, the latest information indicates that there will be increased ICE presence in the state in the near term. As I have shared previously, we don't have any indication that schools will be a focus of these upcoming actions. WE have, however, reviewed our protocols with all staff and shared them with our after-school and community partners. At this point, we will hold school ad extracurricular activities as usual. If there are any changes to that plan, we will be sure to inform you as soon as possible. We are also developing plans in case events make a remote learning option necessary for some students. This will include making school meals available. Please know remote learning is a last resort, because being in school in person is the best and most effective way fr students to learn. Students rely on schools for a consistent structure and routine, essential services, support from trusted adults, and continued access to instruction and extracurricular programming. Develop a written and evolving action plan, designate an employee to interact with gov't agents and provide them with a related script and contact list of company representatives. 2.Fron desk employees should greet agets but not answer any questions: simply state tat the appropriate employee is on the way and immediately call lawyers and other designated outside contacts. 3. Train emplyees on elements of the action pla, offer hypothetical scenarios and provide opportuities to ask questions. 4. Update the action plan as needed based on lessons learned in training and in practice. Prepare the worksite: 1. Focus on compliance and safety. Make sure all requird employee documentation is up to date. 2. Identify a specific public area were the designated employee will take the agents. It should be the shortest pathway where the agents will see the smallest number of additional staff. 3. Mark public and private areas with signs and install curtains or other barriers to obstruct sigh lies into private areas. 4. Consider how the cmpany may represent affested employees or owners and the potential conflicts that may arise from those actions. If ICE agents arrive: X DO NOT: - "Buzz" them in; if te entire building is non-public, go to the door. - Talk to them alone, argue with them or physically resist, mpede, or ru from agents. - Glare at the agents, roll your eyes, make snide remarks or touch their dgs. - Consent t a search or agree t be interviewed - ask for a lawyer. DO: - Stay calm, refer to the script and request their identification. Note their ID ad badge numbers. - Check their documents. If it's a warrant, check for a signature and that the address is correct. - Keep your hands in view. - Present any requested documentation, such as driver's licese r wrk authorization. - Take notes or record if possible, or create a record of the encounter after the fact. >>Call law…
