Flavors rich in your small talk crystal clear, I forget all those years lost. 8 Our-Posterity Road wanders Regal-Overnight Creek at home in capital outlands, Beauty-Swell Lake in Purple-Tower Peak shadow. Fragrant field-rice warrior-bird grains, pecked-over remains. In emerald kindred-trees aging perch emperor-birds, as exquisite women gather kingfisher-green springtime gifts and immortals set out again in their boat. It is late. My florid brush once defied the ch'i-shape of things: now I gaze mirror-deep into wildlands-hair white, gaze grief-sung and sinking.

agree with this review. to me it feels like the translation adds obscurity and awkwardness that isn’t necessarily present in the original poem
in this four-line "Cut-Short Poem": I River sweeps moonlight across stone. Stream empties mist-fringed blossoms. Perched birds understand ancient Way. Sails pass, spend night in whose home? The missing articles, for some readers, will have the whiff of an Orientalist impulse to use broken English in an attempt to sound like a non-native speaker. To say "The river sweeps moonlight" may sound more prosaic, but it avoids inadvertent stereotyping. Some readers will also feel confused by Hinton's literal translations of place names. For example, the city of Ch'ang-an, now called Xian, in Hinton's new translation becomes "Peace-Perpetua," and Chengdu becomes "Altar-Whole City." While these literal translations perhaps sound more poetic, they make the poems feel unlocated. In his 1989 Selected, Hinton used the transliterated names of towns in the poems, as when he opens "Moonlit Night" with the line "Tonight at Fu-chou." Contrast this with his revised translation of the same line: "Tonight at Deer-Altar." The new version sounds like the location of a religious rite, rather than a city.

this cover is beautiful but unfortunately so far i am really not getting on with this translation. if a poem is about taishan please call it taishan or mt tai, not “exalt mountain”. that is unnecessarily exoticising for the sake of it

Those lying at the rear were immediately savaged by the beast. Spotting this from his tree, Ching Nam's eyes bulged with rage and the desire came on him to summon all his strength and go down to save them, but he knew he was no match for the beast. Exigency inducing sudden ingenuity, Ching Nam pulled out a sharp blade from about his waist, and focusing on the beast threw it down with force, striking the animal right on the back. Blood spurted forth, and it gave a loud howl, before retreating into the undergrowth. Ching Nam jumped down and inspected those who had been savaged.
