I got an automated email about an RMA I'd submitted. The attachment had a .xls extension, but it was a plain-text file. I wonder if the company knows they're doing that.

I spent some time on the road behind a cybertruck last night. Its tail light is a strip of red LEDs across the entire width. When it brakes, the central 1/3 or so of the light strip turns OFF.

There's a habit many people around Houston have of turning on their car's hazard blinkers when it rains. At night, when seeing is poor due to rain, flashing lights in my face is absolutely unhelpful.

Do you think Weyoun's criticisms helped make Jake Sisko a better writer?

I read in a book today about Edward I siezing vast quantities of "corn" to feed his armies. I knew that couldn't be referring to maize because that's a New World crop unknown to 13th century Europeans. Apparently, corn used to be the word for any type of grain.

There's no L in joyeaux. It would be kind of strange if there was.

Workmen repaired the water main outside my house today. I heard all the water drain out of my pipes when the pressure dropped. It's quite a sound.

One thing I haven't seen discussed is the selection of Dolby AC-4 audio for ATSC 3.0. Opus has been available since 2012. Choosing a different lossy codec is simply an error.

I've never seen a ventriloquist dummy in any fiction that isn't intensely unpleasant.

Who comes up with vendor due diligence questions? All the ones I've seen are gibberish.

I worked out one time that a 131,072-lane highway would be about 300 miles wide.

For years, my kitty has begged for whatever I'm making in the kitchen, only to refuse to eat it when I put some on the floor for him. What is it he finally eats? Lentil soup.

I had all the insulation sucked out of my attic. It was 20+ years old, and I could hear rodents scratching around up there. I'm hopeful the new insulation that arrives tomorrow will do an even better job, but for tonight, my AC is really struggling.

This was fun to make #origami
August 2, 2025 at 2:28 AM
I checked out so many origami books from the library when I was a kid. I didn't pay much attention to titles or authors, plus it was a quarter century ago, so it's difficult finding those books again now.

What's your favorite Platonic solid?

Perhaps because I grew up reading origami books, I find it intensely unpleasant trying to learn new folds from a video.

LEPIDUS: What manner o’ thing is your [tariff]?
ANTONY: It is shaped, sir, like itself, and it is as broad as
it hath breadth. It is just so high as it is, and moves
with it own organs. It lives by that which nourisheth
it, and the elements once out of it, it
transmigrates.
