I'm in favor of Internet infrastructure being distributed widely around the world. No one country should hold as much power over the whole network as the US currently does. But I also fear Balkanization of the Internet. It is at its best when information flows freely.

I like something of a hybrid I've seen in a few works: you can make instantaneous jumps, but only between certain points. This would be like the collapsar jumps in *The Forever War* or the Bose nodes of Charles Sheffield's Heritage universe. The nodes are natural phenomena, not constructed portals.

I think I was pulled over for wearing a heavy coat. It was summer in Texas, so the coat would have been uncomfortable outside, but it wasn't uncomfortable inside my air-conditioned car. The cop gave me a warning that my license plate lamp was out, but I checked later and it wasn't.

I do, though for a slightly different (related) reason. I don't like the terms under which digital media is "sold". I don't like DRM restrictions. Buying physical media and ripping it lets me use it how I want, on the devices I want.

I had a 17" Dell workstation a few years ago. It was quite heavy and the fans could get pretty loud. For that level of performance, I'd be looking at a mini PC. It, a monitor, and peripherals aren't *that much* less portable that such a large laptop.
