And (most of) the world has ignored, erased, excused the use of rape and torture. History sighs, repeats itself.

A drash on the death of Miriam. And a bit about July 4th.

I'm seeing people comparing Alligator Alcatraz to Auschwitz. The better comparison is to Manzanar. We, the US, under FDR, took immigrants and citizens from their homes and imprisoned them. That was less than a hundred years ago.
If we cannot reckon with our own history, who are we?

The child who said the Emperor had no clothes was hushed by his parents before anyone could hear. Or maybe she chose to keep her mouth shut for fear of ridicule. We tell the story the way we wish it were, not the way the world is.

Today they have crossed a deep red line.

We, the people, must hold the president and his appointees accountable for this outrageous abuse against American liberty.

On the unholy alliance between Islam and Marxism. With a dash of Christian symbolism thrown in. Long, but very much worthwhile.

To those saying the young Israeli couple murdered in DC deserved it because genocide,* yes, you would have turned your neighbors in. You just did.
To Trump and his ilk using the murder to spew hate, Jews aren't your bitch. Just fuck right off.
To everyone, read some damn history.

*No it isn't.

Yom HaShoah was last week, so here's a reminder: the world's Jewish population is 15M, 1M less than the 16M of 1939. The Gazan population increased by almost 23K in the last year, yet Israelis are accused of genocide. My conclusion? Jews suck at genocide, but many people excel at hating Jews.

I spent March 2023 in Israel during the protests against judicial “reform.” For months, every single Saturday after Shabbat ended, Jews flooded the streets waving flaga and chanting for democracy.
Let’s do the same here: Hands -Off rallies everywhere, every week until we can stop this fascism.

Every Purim, someone brings up Chapter 9, where Jews kill a bunch of people. They use that chapter to insist Jews must reckon their bloodthirsty impulses--an implicit use of the blood-libel trope, the stench of which permeates these essays. It is also a complete misread of what that chapter means.

In case you were wondering, they are going full-out antisemitic against the Jewish judge that blocked Khalil’s deportation.

Because none of this is about countering antisemitism. It’s about weaponizing (real) antisemitism to undermine democracy and the rule of law.

Look, I watched Bishop Marion Edgar Budde's speech. It was spot on. And it was brave. But it was also her job. It was what she signed up for. She was lucky to have had the opportunity to speak truth to power--I wish I could have had that chance. 1/2

This is an important read both for the specific situation and because we humans have a tendency to grab the nearest apparent cause of a problem, rather than paying attention to context and history.
