What's a term for "crossing the rubicon" where the point of no return isn't actually a point of no return and we retreat back across it repeatedly

So on the one hand, I have a hard time understanding why US politics started turning its back on science in the 80s. I get that newspaper editorials were influential and stuff, but it seems like up until then following the research had pretty much won permanent global hegemony for the US. So why […]

#ACAB means ALL of them. That means globally.

I think people overestimate how much police "stop" or prevent violent crimes, and underestimate how social safety nets and prosperity actually prevent it. Cops are not good at their jobs, and having your neighbors around (which is why walkable […]

The administration that swore it would deport millions is now congratulating itself for 4,000 arrests in a months-long operation in a major city that was supposedly a hotbed for immigrant crime. Overall, only 17% of individuals arrested by immigration officials over the last year have been […]

If you're saying scooters aren't motorcycles, that just tells me you don't know the difference between a standard motorcycle, a cruiser, and a sports bike

Been spending some time on dating apps, trying to engage with single culture and I'm very confused. Why are all of these older women listing themselves as 30-somethings?? Is there some kind of an underground "I seek older women who lie to me" subculture???

I'm realizing that in the past when I thought language learning "wasn't working", it's because I didn't know what it would feel like if it *was* working

Currently at ~A2 in Spanish, which is very very low, but familiarity is like: I don't hear "manzana" and think "apple", I hear "manzana" and I […]

The market the last few days has been really remarkable for its apparent sudden lack of irrationality and it reveals something the media hasn't really considered before:

If/When LLMs live up to their hype, "impacting" broad swatches of the American service sector (77% of US GDP), the real […]

I recently developed a "pretty good" ML model to classify web pages. Classic, deterministic AI, not this LLM crazy sauce

And by "pretty good" I mean it has an error rate under 20%. So if it looks at 20k pages it will incorrectly classify 4k

You do not want AI in any form anywhere near your […]

The company's claim on the idea and territory of the orbital data center constellation is worth "money". That flagpole will hold value for a long time regardless of the company's actual ability to execute, primarily because it excites investors
