Today’s winning data label goes to this flea

I’ve no idea who collected it but I’d love to met them, sounds like they are my sort of person 🤓

Possibly the most chaotic #museum collection I've ever seen: a drawer containing literally thousands of pinned #flies, at the Chau Chak Wing Museum at @sydney.edu.au.
True fact: this drawer contains more museum objects than the entire UK National Gallery.

Happy 1st of #ssSnaketember! Today’s theme is Asymmetry!
Take a face. The left and right side will often be mirror images. Not the case for the face of the Keeled Slug #Snake.
These snakes have up to 50% more teeth on the right side of their jaw than their left
But WHY?

#ssSnaketember is migrating to Bluesky, and it’s bigger than ever!
We’ll be bringing you an awesome #snake story, every weekday, for the rest of the month!
I can promise that there will be noodles, and there will be highly boopable snoots.

Come for the #snoots, stay for the #science! 🐍

Research out that I was involved in at the @nhm.org under the @chalksea.bsky.social project!

I had a great time sampling chalk specimens for this project.

Congrats @plesiosarahs.bsky.social and co.!!

Happy Birthday #EuniceNewtonFoote! 🎂
She would be 206 years old today!

We recently named the trace fossil #Osspecuseunicefooteae after her in this study led by @plesiosarahs.bsky.social on Cretaceous bone-eating worms:

Images of the trace fossil Osspecus eunicefooteae. The inset shows a post mortem burrow in the bone of an fossilised ichthyosaur (from the Cretaceous of the UK) as seen in a slice from a micro X-ray CT scan. The main panel shows a 3D digital model of the burrow made in specialist software (Avizo) by tracing the burrow slice by slice. The burrow is about 2.7 mm across.

Not a bad homage given that we didn't have much time and it was done from memory.

Apparently I'm at the stage of my career where random men I don't know email me and explain in a patronising tone things I already understand and then get upset when I don't reply. Quite enjoying continuing to not reply.
