Russia has become the largest single-country buyer of Ecuadorian bananas, purchasing 1.5 million metric tons during 2024 and the first half of 2025.

How is it related to global diversification of cocaine trafficking routes? 🤔

An algorithm. Benevolent algorithms are underrated.

My experience on Twitter pre-2022 was fantastic because the algorithm enabled me to see useful content and placed my posts in the feeds of people I hoped would see it.

New WP thread! 🤓 Vietnam's solar panel exports boomed between 2018 and 2022. With my PhD student Meng Yu Ngov, Trang Thu Tran, and Gaurav Nayyar we look at how this industry success can be attributed to attracting FDI and importing parts and components, as well to Chinese subsidy spillovers.👇

Chinese firms and inputs are crucial ingredients in Vietnam's export success --> By attracting FDI and importing parts and components, developing countries can participate in advanced manufacturing and gain access to export markets 🔥 And there is potential cross-border effects of green subsidies!!!

Using difference-in-differences models, we find that firms that start supplying to Chinese FDI firms based in Vietnam may experience significant gains in labor productivity. This effect is specific to Chinese FDI, as we find no positive spillovers from supplying to FDI firms on average.
plvezina.bsky.social
The solar panel industry has grown to a total of around 400 firms and 51,000 jobs in 2022, including firms that supply inputs to solar panel producers. Among them, Chinese firms and their suppliers account for the large majority of jobs.
plvezina.bsky.social
Chinese FDI firms account for 25 of the 79 firms producing solar panels in Vietnam, yet they account for 75% of Vietnam's solar panel exports and 50% of total employment among solar panel firms in Vietnam. Their solar panel are cheaper, especially those exported to the US.
plvezina.bsky.social
We show China accounts for most input supplies to Vietnam's firms, with 600+ firms exporting 100+ different inputs. Inputs from China are cheaper than those from other countries, and all covered by subsidies (ht Global Trade Alert). Vietnamese firms' benefit from Chinese subsidized cheap inputs.

As a green tech, solar panels are heavily affected by industrial policy (see @nathanlane.bsky.social's paper). In China, local subsidies helped solar panel firms grow by 76% per year during 2004-2013 and China now accounts for more than 80% of solar panel manufacturing across the value chain.

We compile a new list of all the inputs and raw materials that are part of solar panel value chains and use firm-to-firm transaction level data on Vietnam's solar panel industry from Panjiva as well as firm-level data from Vietnam's Enterprise Surveys to describe Vietnam's solar panel value chains.
