The latest UK Hydrological Summary has been published 🌧️
November was UK's wettest month so far in 2025 & many areas have shifted from drought concerns to flood risk.

Groundwater levels notably low and reservoir levels still below average in parts. Winter rainfall amount will be crucial.

A team led by UKCEH's Dr Lucy Ridding compared a 15% sample of the 1960s maps with land cover from the 1930s, 1990 and 2020.

Fittingly, Lucy's grandmother helped create the original maps!

Long-term monitoring tells a story of change. For 80 years scientists have monitored Windermere and nearby lakes in Cumbria, tracking how climate change and pollution are reshaping our freshwater ecosystems.

It’s one of the longest lake datasets anywhere in the world! 🌎

Despite recent rain, soils in many areas remain drier than normal for the time of year. UKCEH uses cosmic ray neutrons to monitor soil moisture to depths of 20–30 cm at @cosmosuk.bsky.social sites across the UK.

At this time of year, ladybirds are moving around looking for a good place to spend the winter. On warmer, sunny days, large numbers may be seen flying in search of a suitable habitat 🐞
