The pair of twisted yellow brown/yellow black wires to the interior fusebox area and the white/red data wire to the bcm have good continuity so I'm not too suspicious of them yet

Other than a basic OBD2 reader with torque and VCDS my diagnostic options are pretty limited. I'm hoping it's not the central unit at fault as it seems like a nuisance getting a new one to work and have the correct mileage on the odometer.

I've just tried disconnecting that, other than the rev counter not working too with it disconnected there was no change.

It is an R53 and has got a rev counter which is working perfectly so I had ignored it so far. I'll try disconnecting it and see what happens.

It's getting better though, that wrong answer only drained the water supply of 3 small towns rather than the 4 large ones it would have taken a year ago.
