The article I wrote for Alliance Mag is now public!

"From undermining democracy to destabilising the climate: a brief history of the neo-liberal Atlas Network

The mythical Atlas carries the world on his shoulders. This one tries to put it under its thumb."

5. In other countries, we need to press our governments:
A. to stand firm against the far right on all fronts (eg don't try to compete with them on cruelty to immigrants),
B. to create resilient systems independent of the US,
C. radically to reform campaign finance to stop it happening here.

I’ve unfortunately needed to add more material to my post from yesterday. The re-election of Donald Trump is looking like the biggest act of American self-destruction since the Civil War.

Science is political. It wouldn't necessarily have to be partisan.

But when one party is opposed to science-based policy, scientists have a choice between saying "you're right, thoughts and prayers are probably as effective as reducing carbon emissions" or saying "fuck that."

JAMA Viewpoint:

“Regardless of the popularity or powerful interests behind a policy, the responsibility of the profession is to speak out when the science is clear that it will threaten health or safety.”
"To condone policies that the profession knows will compromise health—or to remain silent and look away—is to be complicit in putting population health at risk"

To every university, every public hospital, every academic society: SILENCE IS NOT AN OPTION. #medsky

So, here is a list of my favourite pieces that you might missed from The Lancet Infectious Diseases in 2024 that reflect on the field at large, in no specific order.

Fun and informative! A research integrity Advent calendar. What a great initiative @abalkina.bsky.social
The Advent calendar was featured in Nature doi.org/10.1038/d41586-024-04013-w. The idea came spontaneously on 01.12. I had so much fun creating one for my daughter that I extended it to #researchintegrity. I didn’t expect it to gain so much attention. I’m very grateful and hope you enjoy it too

Health is political. This is what many practitioners of public and clinical health believe. Health and health policy are shaped by the political ideology of governments, whether that means more money ...
