Eh, I just don't think Hemingway's my guy.

About 3 months later the director announces her retirement, after 60+ years with the institution. She refuses any kind of celebration and it becomes obvious she is being pushed out... and as far as I know, those pallets are still wrapped up in the basement of that building.

After she leaves we have a staff meeting in which the director once again brings up remediation and says the old employee was too sensitive about the lead, it's not that much of an issue, and we should start processing it again. My eyes about bulge out of my head. FWIW I also get a new job.

She's got PPE and is getting weekly blood tests while she does this, but it is not enough, and she also starts to have lead symptoms. She's devastated and refuses to do it anymore. The project halts and shortly after she gets a new job. (Thank god for her.)

And the director knew this...because she had gotten lead poisoning while packing the original collection!!! Then turned around and asked one of our archivists to start on remediation and processing. The archivist is (understandably!) nervous about this & OHS gets involved.

Lead dust and flakes were caught up throughout the papers and had been packed into the original pallets that went to the city archives. The pallets were never unpacked, remediated, or processed, and they came right back to us just as hot as the day they left.

It's 5 pallets of boxes from a notable biologist & our director packed the collection herself in the 70s when she was starting out as an archivist. His lab was in one of the hospital's early clinic buildings. Unfortunately another thing was in that building...lead paint.

Whew this is a doozy. Was working in a medical archive when the director announced acceptance of a new collection. This is a collection that originated at our institution in the 60s/70s and was then given to the city archives. It sat in their basement for 50 years before they offered it back to us.

No! It's about not being able to rename the group chat & also something about what a good deal you can get at Costco? Like I paid $200 three years ago, I think I got the better deal.

FWIW my boyfriend has an iPhone and has never said shit to me about it. So like, I guess it's not all Apple people, but it's a bad look to rag your friends for not paying a $1200 fealty to a consumerist cult.
