I’m very open to being shown the limitations of my previous efforts to investigate this topic, but as of the present moment, I’m finding it hard not to see the absence of more transparent discussion about environmental impacts as a red flag in its own right.

My discipline is far from perfect when it comes to handling questions of cause and effect, but it seems to me pretty fundamental that investigations of potential benefit of using LLMs ought to at least interrogate the potential (largely invisible or at least temporally lagged) communal downsides /3

… speakers claiming they lack the expertise to comment on human impact of the various massive energy-consuming activities which seem to be required to prop up the LLM parade. often paired with a mocking dismissal of “unrealistic” concerns about “boiling the oceans”. /2

More of a question but: why does it seem to be so difficult to estimate the environmental costs of genAI in a way that could conceivably be useful to models related to human health outcomes? I’m no expert but only seem to encounter hand waving about projected improvements in efficiency or /1
