Review by Branson Reese The Gillman is a strange outlier in the Universal horror pantheon; the eternally misunderstood youngest child always photoshopped awkwardly into the group shots. He's like Hermes or Delirium of the Endless. When you're casting all of your friends as different Halloween monsters, Gillman usually comes dead last, given to whichever Marvin The Martian ass outlier friend you don't have something better for but don't want to exclude. Visually, he's as good as it gets. A weird, rubbery amphibious freak always soaking wet. His dopey expression is chilling in its uncanniness. But he lacks the charisma of a Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, or even an Invisible Man. The Rodney Dangerfield of classic monsters in terms of accrued respect. This poor motherfucker wasn't even invited to the Monster Mash. As a kid it's easy to lump all of the Universal monsters together as assume that all their movies were coming out at the same time, maybe even all at once during an especially spooky year. But Creature From The Black Lagoon came out a solid two decades after the big boys, making him a man out of time. He only just last year found out the towers fell. As an adult it's extremely obvious that this is a mid 50s affair, from the lumbering "dun dun DUN!" score to the high waisted bathing suits. It's a creature feature designed to compete with the moral panic of the day: hickeys. And I think it's safe to say that CFTBL won the war on hickeys. Nowadays it's all sloppy toppy and bussy ate-ing. A proud legacy if ever there was one. So much has been written about the beautiful underwater photography in this movie that I half expected a style guide to show up after the credits, recommending the key turns of phrase I see in review after review. In general I think we did something unbelievably hubristic when we abandoned black and white for color in the 60s, but watching the murky black waters here filed that opinion down into a prison shiv. All directors should be forced at gunpoint to shoot on film for black and white. This film simply wouldn't have the same impact with Gillman swimming around in beautiful clear blue water. No, he's got to emerge from wet, infinite shadow like he's being born out of the womb of chaos that birthed the titans. The scene where he swims with Julia Adams is correctly iconic. Not only is it stomach churningly suspenseful but it's melancholy and haunting. I don't know a lot of films that play both sides of a moment like that -the eerie feeling of being watched by something out in nature and the heartbreak of wanting something you can't have-without skimping on either. It's a sinking feeling when Gillman swims away and you're forced to realize he's got a code which means he's probably got a soul which means his inevitable death will be an actual loss. Here's to Gillman. I hope you got to nut in heaven.
