still periodically caught off-guard by the insanely good branding that funyuns are just fun onions

When you could code silly quizzes on Facebook, it was FULL of "what would you be in medieval times?!" etc.

I made one that nearly always answered "died as a child", "died in childbirth", "lived and died as a servant"

People got SUPER mad with it.

Everyone assumes they'll be at the top of the tree

The subtext of ‘we should be more like Dubai’, beyond the obvious racism, is ‘I should have a servant’.

Give the dead what they're used to! I recite psalms and Jewish prayers for my Jewish dead, but for my orisha ancestors I sing Lucumí songs and give them their traditional offerings. The dead still have to meet you where you are, but giving them what they're used to is part of our work, too!

My rule for doing that is that I give each tradition its time and space. I do orisha stuff at my orisha shrines, espiritismo at my boveda, Hermetic stuff at my Hermetic altar, &c. While they all inform me equally as a whole human being, they don't mix on their own! Good walls, good neighbors, &c.

I think it's a natural human thing to do many things, especially in contexts where there are concurrent traditions available that inform us culturally and historically; I think of it as "doing religion" rather than "being of a religion", i.e. one isn't Buddhist so much as one "does Buddhism".

I'm glad that my stuff can help in at least some small way! Spirituality is like medicine: it should make our lives better, but sometimes we need multiple approaches. Therapy, exercise, diet, medication, surgery, acupuncture—it's all medicine! Ditto for all sorts of spiritual traditions.

And the last bit of testing for this version of my almanac software is complete! I'm sure there'll be bugs to find later on (when aren't there?), but at least for now, all I've left to do for TATA v3 is work on formatting a bit more until I'm satisfied with it.

Stay tuned!

When the Moon enters the first mansion, one of the prayer practices I like doing is this one, a sevenfold invocation of blessing and refuge. It's come in clutch a few times when things get rough, to boot, so I like keeping it up as a regular thing. Give it a whirl!

Start telling people to fuck off. Cultivate it as a virtue. Practice saying "Oh, fuck off" and "Oh, kiss my ass" and "Buddy, if you don't shut the fuck up right now then we're gonna have us a goddamn problem" to yourself in the mirror until they feel natural.

The fact that it's considered indefensible to say things like "That doesn't make any goddamn sense" or "That's some fake shit you read on the internet and you're a jackass" in a professional setting is imo a major contributing factor in the current mess. We're Emperor's New Clothes-ing right to hell

It is morally wrong to want a computer to be sentient. If you owned a sentient thing, you would be a slaver. If you want sentient computers to exist, you just want to create a new kind of slavery. The ethics are as simple as that. Sorry if this offends

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI:

At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.
AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people
