Hello newskies! I'm Dan, a game designer currently hailing from the Seattle area. I have lots of schipperkes, ADHD, and many (mostly crafty) hobbies in varying states of hyperfocus or neglect.

Favorite game: Journey
Color: Aqua
Album: Paul Simon - Graceland
Cocktail: Red Hook
Dinosaur: Amargasaurus
A selfie of me with glasses, a goatee, and curly hair down past my shoulders. I'm wearing a lanyard & attendee pass for Unreal Fest. Two small black schipperke dogs on leashes, ears up and panting in excitement

Tbh I don't know that I'd trust Ubi to get Reconstruction and Jim Crow right, but with the right writers and liberty to get uncomfortable... Dang that could have been a game.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

There were some tense moments, but two nights ago Junior fully doubled in volume (hit the plastic overnight), so yesterday I put them to the test.

Sweet, sweet victory.

Some people really just can't think more than 5sec into the future.

This guy spends days listening to a song about burning things down, takes a video of the pre-fire region, immediately calls 911 to report (himself), and then ASKS CHATGPT if he's liable for a fire caused by his cigarette.

The Palisades Fire erupted on Jan. 7 and went on to kill 12 people and destroy more than 6,800 homes and buildings.

Hey all, I'm trying to get a baseline for how good people are at detecting whether fiction is AI-generated or human-written (most of the research on this is for nonfiction and my hypothesis is we're better with fiction).

If you have time, give it a try?

Protect the land that inspired this page.
A page from Kate Beaton’s “Ducks”. Five panels, in panel 1 we see Kate’s feet on the beach at the edge of the water. In panel 2 we see a wave wash over her feet. In Panel 3 we see a zoomed out image of the shoreline, beautiful and calm, wild and undeveloped, Kate is still standing at the shore, dwarfed by the landscape. In panel 4 we see Kate looking up and shielding her eyes against the sun with her arm. In panel 5 we see her perspective, a seagull crossing the disc of the sun.

And also, this example is so far and above what 90% of images need! It's the A+ in an AP English class example.

It's perfectly acceptable to imagine describing an image to someone who is driving a car, and can't look. "A capybara relaxing in water with a yuzu on its head" is still VERY GOOD.

Irregular reminder that alt text on images is a valuable accessibility tool, and also lets your images show in search results or respect mute lists. For instance, I found the below image by searching "capybara alt text".

Follow-up reminder: if you want to use alt text but keep forgetting, there's a setting for that!

A brief guide on writing good alt text for images, which suggests including
1. Who or what
2. Their expression or emotion
3. A description of the image
4. Notable colors
5. Interesting features

The included example image and description: "A capybara looking relaxed in a hot spa. Yellow yuzu fruits are floating in the water, and one is balanced on the top of the capybara's head."

Dan's addition: saving the "interesting thing" for last is a bit like writing a joke - end with the memorable punchline!

3/3, but most interesting IMO is that the only one I wasn't completely sure of was human-authored.

I guess it's easier for human work to be flawed than an AI-generated piece to be flawless.

Periodic reminder that it can be tempting to make fun of how your enemies look, but you should not do this. It can lead you to mistakenly vilify/idolize people who you shouldn't. Do not substitute appearance for behavior.

I can't believe I need to say this, but surely you can find something other than Trump's weight to make fun of.

And whatever you think of the deployment, they're National Guardsmen doing what they're told. Surely you can find something other than their weight to pick on.
