I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

It's why I use the term "players" instead of "gamers." It's more indicative of behavior, not self-perception or cultural affiliation.

Exactly. The conclusion we came to was that "gamer" was a cultural designator, not an indication of game play behavior.

In other words, non-gamers could be playing hundreds of hours a month, and some did.

When sliced like that, based on self-identification, most players aren't "gamers."

There's a study done years ago now which shows that a huge chunk of people who don't consider themselves "gamers" play more than ten hours a week.

Further, many people who don't consider themselves gamers will, in some cases, drastically underestimate their game play time.

Some other quirks: Methodologies have varied widely. Women are far less likely to announce their status as "gamers." Data collected now is likely more reliable...within reason.

The numbers have been climbing since then. Around then, it was closer to 40-42% women. For the last decade, it's somewhere between 48-49% women. For some slices, it's 52% women.

More importantly, these studies USUALLY leave out non-binary people, which often hits <2%, depending on genre.

This may come as a surprise, but as a Yankees fan for over 50 years, I don't sweat losing. No one I know...no one...will see more championships than I have in my lifetime. It's not like we won't be back next year or the year after or whatever.

Contrast that to my NY Rangers fandom.
