Join us tomorrow, Weds, Oct 8, 2025 in Juneau and online . We are focusing on the dirty fuel that cruise ships and other big ships use and the problems that come with that, including exhaust scrubbers, black carbon, particulate emissions, and persistent oil spill risk.

In Portland today a massive cruise ship dumping millions of gallons of toxic scrubber wash into Casco Bay.

We have a choice about this water pollution. We can ban scrubber wash & force the cruise ships to burn clean fuel.

What are we waiting for?

The Enchanted Princess in Portland today.

Anything but enchanting.

The ship will dump millions of gallons of toxic scrubber wash into Casco Bay, while polluting our air.

It is time to ban scrubber wash to protect Portland’s port & people.

It’s all bad, we agree. We focus on cruise ships because they have no purpose other than entertainment, they are non-essential marine vessels.
portcruisecontrol.bsky.social
Unfortunately, CruiseMaine sees you as a gold mine for the cruise lines and they are going to do everything they can to bring in more ships (since they lost Bar Harbor).
We’re very worried for you!

The Royal Caribbean cruise ship in Portland today burns clean, distillate fuel.

So, if they can do it, why can’t all cruise ships?

This is not sustainable.

2025 cruise season in Portland:
110 ships
2026 cruise season in Portland:
144 ships

No oversight, no transparency, no knowledge of costs. Just more & more pollution.

No one will ever convince me that this is ok. Ever.

Yes and some used scrubbers to comply. It seems Europe is much further ahead than the US. In many things!
portcruisecontrol.bsky.social
Also, Denmark has banned all scrubber wash discharge (open & closed loop) in their ports & territorial waters. We have to learn to be smart like Denmark!
