I'm not saying going group camping during one of the biggest thunderstorms of the year was a bad decision, but it was an expensive one.
The large group awning from our group's campsite after a storm. The awning has collapsed completely onto the gathering area below it, crushing a bunch of electronics, some lighting, coolers, and more. Some of the stuff was salvageable, much was not. Oh well. We'll come back stronger next year.

Today I have learned of the Henley-on-Todd Regatta, which is run on a dry riverbed in Australia and apparently gets canceled if the river actually turns up. I thought I loved that big dumb stupid desert kangaroo island before, but this is a new level of wonderful.
A regatta "boat" which appears is actually a parade float driving on a sandy stream bed. Atop is a crew of about 10 people dressed in matching black uniforms and cheering exuberantly. The boat has a shark painted on the front and is firing a bank of cannons which unleash a huge cloud of multicolored confetti.

A fake Wikipedia entry for the Battle of Lake Travis, in which a fleet of Trump boats went to war with nothing and lost. The battle ended as a complete victory for the lake; the Trump boaters were scattered, some sunk by their own wakes, and the rest were forced to flee. The incident is also known in some circles as "Dumbkirk".

The sociopolitical commentary, for those not versed in this history, is that none of the Western powers especially cared to either save or defeat the Ottomans. Europeans all had a vested interest in keeping the Ottomans hobbled and reliant upon Europe for their survival. The UK and tsarist Russia may have been nominally opponents, but they were really playing a great strategic powers game together with the Ottomans as their shared victim.
