Photojournalist Jonathan Chang was prevented from bringing his camera into a San Diego federal building on Dec. 5.

He had previously entered without problems to cover the immigration court, but was told the policy had recently changed.

On Aug. 8, @nategowdy.bsky.social was thrown to the ground and detained by police while documenting protests outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown LA.

And he wasn’t the only journalist placed in cuffs that night.

Matthew Kaplan was the first of 32 journalists known to be detained or charged in 2025.

He was photographing an anti-deportation protest in Indiana on Jan. 18 when an officer grabbed him from behind and placed him under arrest.

Our database — now spanning nine years and including nearly 400 arrests of journalists — shows that most incidents never lead to prosecution.

In 2025, 90% of the journalists detained or arrested were not charged, or the charges have since been dropped.

Three journalists were assaulted by Illinois State Police while covering protests outside an ICE detention facility in Broadview on Nov. 1.

So far in 2025, the Tracker has documented 157 assaults on journalists.
