The worst assumption you can make in strategic forecasting is consistency (unless you're only interested in narrow forecast windows). Change is inevitable, ceteris paribus is a fantasy of convenient models.

I had a really fun time working on the code that was used to make these fallout visualizations for this USA Today article. I will soon be incorporating some of it into the NUKEMAP and probably making a version of this "mass attack fallout mapper" for public use. www.usatoday.com/graphics/int...
Fallout maps show how an attack on nuclear silos would impact US cities
USA TODAY mapped the far-reaching potential consequences of a nuclear strike against America's 450 nuclear missile silos.

Some folks out there are *this* close to getting it but their focus is too narrow. Trumpism is bigger than oil and deportations, it's bigger than climate change denial.

It's the systematic response to overshoot.
January 5, 2026 at 12:29 PM
🧵 Friendly reminder... overshoot begets totalitarianism. Today's U.S. military action in Venezuela has deeper strategic impact beyond oil reserves and short-term regime change
🧵 Friendly reminder... no matter how stupid the current batch of fascists appear to be, they are equally as dangerous to human lives. Hyperindividualized society just makes you easier to marginalize by a system of oppression.
Friendly reminder... the technology to implement an entirely totalitarian surveillance state exists and is very much in use already

My last movie of 2025, finally halfway through my AFI Top 100 chronological watch-thru, #50 - Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - my 3rd time watching, already planning a rewatch for tomorrow. It's so bitter, so good. We'll meet again...
AFI watch #49/100 - To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) - a massive influence on culture, race politics, high school curriculum, and yes of course Hollywood courtroom dramas. Last watch Lawrence of Arabia is often assumed to be a white savior film, TKAM viewed in a modern perspective clearly is one
AFI watch #48/100 - Lawrence of Arabia (1962). There are a lot of war films on the AFI Top 100, 16 to be exact, David Lean is responsible for 2 of them. Brutally long, meticulously shot, well characterized, and deeply contemplative... could be talking about Lawrence or Bridge of the River Kwai there

This afternoon in 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announced his “Atoms for Peace” plan at the United Nations General Assembly, which led to the creation of the International Atomic Energy Agency and unwittingly—and paradoxically—made it much easier for states to develop nuclear weapons.

AFI watch #47/100 - West Side Story (1961) - forgot to log this one. Is it culturally significant? Sure. Is it the best Romeo & Juliet adaptation? No, IMO. Film is best watched if the viewer jumps in completely and stops trying to intellectually digest the weird bits (like Natalie Wood in brownface)
