NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

Something I've come to learn about "natural" disasters—which are increasingly human-abetted disasters—is that initial estimates inevitably betray the gravity of the situation in all regards...lives lost, homes destroyed, economic costs. We will all be astounded at the total cost of this catastrophe.
Update: JPM analysts have doubled their insured loss estimate to $20bn+, with total losses as high as $50bn, as blazes continue to rage

A great interview with the usually very media-averse Baroness Owen. 👀
‘Traumatising’ deepfake AI porn could be criminalised. I spoke to Baroness Charlotte Owen, who is attempting to push through a bill addressing the practice of non-consensual explicit images made with AI technology

This is absolutely fucking insane
COP29 is wrapping up this week and people are (finally) calling for the process to be overhauled to *maybe* reduce oil industry influence over it. New documents we uncovered reveal they used a little known UN org to infiltrate from jump. First of three stories: drilled.media/news/IPIECA1
The Great COP Co-opting: New Documents Show Big Oil Has Been There All Along
As global leaders call for overhauling the COP process, new documents show it’s been flawed from the start.

Drax shown to have taken wood from old-growth forests in Canada

"forests that are native species that [have] not been previously harvested” as described in their internal emails

The wood will have been turned into pellets, shipped to England, and burnt for 'clean power'

Finland was on track to be carbon neutral by 2035, has one of the most ambitious net zero targets in the world. Emissions across all industries were cut by a whopping 43%. However its disappearing land sink its total emissions stayed unchanged.

We need urgent action NOW.
The collapse of carbon sinks is a phenomenon that our current climate models show “happening rather slowly over the next 100 years or so.“

The system that sequesters HALF of global emissions failing already in 2023. 😥
Trees and land absorbed almost no CO2 last year. Is nature’s carbon sink failing?
The sudden collapse of carbon sinks was not factored into climate models – and could rapidly accelerate global heating

You can’t tell me Bluesky isn’t delivering pre-Musk Twitter levels of fuck yeah dude
I’m training my cats to play the theremin using basic operant conditioning. I do clicker training w/o the clicker.

The first week was getting them to come toward the awful electronic noise.

Then I started teaching them to high-five my hand near the wires (and not run from the changing screech).
