There's a link between the AI disruption and the authoritarian political attacks on expertise. Highly educated white collar folks considered ourselves to be a powerful culture, on the basis of our expertise & credentials. But that's not where power comes from, and we're learning that the hard way.
All I'm saying here is that there's a strong air from white collar people like we're not supposed to be disrupted. That's for blue collar folks. But we're not special. We never have been. Just lucky. And eventually your luck runs out. Capitalism comes for everybody eventually.

Moderna reportedly spent *750 million dollars* on the study for this vaccine, so it now appears that MAHA might be Fucking With the Money, of Big Pharma no less, so it'll be interesting to see how it all works out (as we sicken and die of preventable disease)

I will admit I'm hot-headed about tech worker issues, so I'l try to be more even-handed in articulating this: Think of the genuine, real grief we feel because of the decimation our good, valued friends in journalism have been enduring over recent years. We know they're victims of heartless tycoons.

It is deeply weird to me that they don’t understand this BUT ALSO they don’t understand the NFL hiring the biggest streamer in the world bc the NFL does want to make money.

(I mean, of course I understand it; it’s just funny.)
America is learning the hard way that "we make a lot of money together, you benefit from trade with us" does not actually equal "we own you and you must be subservient," and that countries will forgo some money to preserve sovereignty.

Today's corrupt, self-interested US leaders don't get that.
Greer: "The thing to keep in mind with Canada is this is a country that's 75% dependent on the United States for its gross domestic product ... it can't be a situation where the Canadians have an antagonistic relationship"

I’ve had 1.75 liters of 190 proof everclear in my cabinet forever and I decided to finally use it. Zesting ~ 6 lbs of citrus is a PITA (why I was putting it off), but it’s done and resting now.

I’ve made this before, with a mix of Eureka and Meyer lemons. The result was as spectacular as promised.
How to Make Limoncello
Few things are as quintessentially Italian as limoncello. The sweet, syrupy, tart, and delightfully strong after-dinner drink originates in southern Italy on the Amalfi coast where they grow lemons th...

One reason I refuse to go to Fred Hutch (besides the more and more expensive screenings they wanted for routine non-problems) is while I was there, they asked me to fill out a survey about AI use in medicine for a study.

It said AI THINKS LIKE A HUMAN. It does not. It was years ago & I’m still mad.

I think this is a very good analogy and I’m very annoyed that I can’t play with uranium pottery glazes.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Concentration camps are the defining issue in public health right now. Measles and TB outbreaks, healthcare being withheld as punishment for your race. It is not enough simply to turn the grants tap back on. To do so would make us the same as the Nazi scientists who discovered smoking causes cancer

imo a scam economy is what you get when you try to have an information economy but with no information quality control
The post-industrial period of a developed economy is characterized by three phases.

Until the 2010s, we were in a service economy. Now we are in a scam economy. And we are about to find out what phase comes next.
