Watching these giant predators who can easily disembowel me playing exactly like my cats is the Platonic ideal of "But if not friend, why friend shaped?"

The following is REAL footage from Portland, 2025. Viewer discretion is advised.
I wish there was more substance on the causes/magnitude of the emergencies. Was it alarms going off, or actual fires?

I'm curious b/c DC fires cause huge disruptions and scrambling to reroute traffic is nontrivial. I feel like Amazon would want to,L find out why their DCs were constantly on fire.
Is this different than the other beach?
70m+ people voted for this. In terms of what we've become, I think it's clear. ICE is an embodiment of that slice of America: Heartless, callous, racist, and cruel.
My favorite irishism is to say 'yeah, no I will yeah' which in Ireland means 'I will absolutely not be doing that ever. '

It's perfect.
The gulls of Ireland are avian terrorists. This seems totally on brand, but also kind of amusing.

Imagine reporting that to the gardaí...

Pritzker: "He wants to militarize major cities because he wants us to get used to the idea of troops on the streets. I believe he's gonna post people outside of polling places and if he needs to in order to control those elections, he'll assume control of the ballot boxes & count the votes himself"
Part of the problem is that everyone keeps referring to them as ICE agents and not what they actually are: kidnappers and thugs. Calling them agents makes it seem like what they're doing is lawful, when it's not.

We need to describe their crimes as crimes.
I love this initiative and happily used it to send a customized message to my MEPs. It saddens me that Ireland is a supporter of this affront to rights and freedoms, and I hope they all get lots of messages from similarly concerned constituents.

Take action!

fightchatcontrol.eu to contact your ministers, permanent representation, MEPs, and, if you are German or Italian, your national MPs!
@fightchatcontrol.bsky.social thank you for creating this. Chat Control is one of the worst European policies and the fact that MEPs still don't seem to get it indicates that they haven't been hearing enough from worried and concerned constituents.
That is amazing, especially for a foster baby! I think he's a keeper.
It would be nice if the Democrats proposed that Congress should not be paid until the Republicans sort their shit out. So long as you're shut down, nobody is really working very much.
This will get worse. Women will be surveiled, harassed and prosecuted until they have no rights and live in fear. This has always been their plan.
Yay! I'm so happy Cosette came around.

The reasons for eroding privacy always sound reasonable at first (nobody wants to protect terrorists or pedos), but sooner or later, the Overton Window shifts and people are getting rounded up for sending a group meme mocking a politician, or exposing corruption.

No, my message is that govs are containers for power, which can be exercised brutally or w wisdom, & tech is a collection of methods that can be abused or leveraged for good.

TLDR tech and gov aren't stable categories. Validate both (like, by examining Signal's open source code) before you trust.
Have you not paid any attention to all the past cases where the people gave their governments extraordinary powers (ostensibly for good reasons) only to watch their governments abuse that power to stay in power?

Healthy government skepticism is existential.
No, it's based on history. Did you learn nothing about how governments have weaponized information and surveillance of their citizens? Germany has a rich history. As does China, Israel, Hungary, and yes, the United States.

People shouldn't trust their governments in ways that can't be reversed.
Gang: once cops get backdoors that will allow your phone to tell on you for any 'undesirable' conversation you have, that's it. The game is over and you'll be guilty.

That's what Chat Control is.
This would be a terrible decision. It's already bad that so many countries' MEPs (including Ireland) want to mandate technology companies to build a snitch line that violates privacy rights. It's shocking that the EU pushes this now, as they watch the world slither towards authoritarianism.

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...
It's been unreal. The controversies that will weigh on political outcomes remain human scale, whereas everything in the US is just systemically bad and seemingly intractable. Ireland still has some sense of accountability and cause and effect.
Labubu and Trumpianism are both much, much worse.
