Business leader: Our user persona? Well we don't want to constrain our customer base, this product is for everyone

Designer: That's great! Let's talk about accessibility

Business leader: Oh, I didn't mean it like *that*

Happy Friday!

If you'd like to listen to a talk on considering intersectionality and compounding barriers when we think about accessibility, the recording is now on YouTube!

When @ames.world and I spoke at SDinGov we wanted to open up about the realities of actually being in a 'Discovery' team in government.

It's useful to learn from real life examples and experiences which are not glossed over. Understand and tackle the constraints and challenges faced by real teams.

You can listen to it on double speed!

I enjoy listening to recordings of conference talks.

The Camp Digital archive is a treasure trove of brilliant talks. Likewise SDinGov!

It's amazing that thoughtfully crafted content is available and open to everyone 🙌

If we assume that people can't do something at all, it's likely to make the 'standard' experience less accessible.

You want participation to feel natural.

If you have to go on a completely different journey because of the barriers, it becomes another thing which separates you from other people.

The excerpt is from Being Heumann by Judith Heumann.

One of the concepts that came across in the book was that disability rights and accessibility are often not considered or thought about as part of wider human rights or civil rights.

Even with people who work
in human rights every day.

It's important to imagine how a disabled person might be able to participate or do something independently/preserve their autonomy.

Privacy & autonomy are often taken away from people with access needs. Baked in assumptions can reinforce this.

How do we preserve autonomy and dignity in design?
Excerpt from Being Heumann by Judith Heumann

Our peers from Europe complained about how their barriers were seen as purely medical, rather than an issue of human or civil rights.

The basic question was about autonomy. Disabled people wanted to be able to live where they wished, get up and eat when they wished, and hire the personal assistants who helped them, provided they complied with laws regarding workers' rights and benefits, of course. When these supports were run from a medical approach they didn't necessarily support a person's ability to be autonomous, which is why our concept of independent living was so important and starting to permeate other countries' thinking.

We started getting grants to compare state policies policies of specific European countries, developed an internship

On another level, I feel like disabled people have already jumped through loads of hoops and barriers to get into these spaces. Education is less accessible, ableism, access to support..

Then, you encounter the assumption that disabled people don't exist in these 'highly skilled' professions.

It resonated with me so much!

Times where a virtual whiteboard has been made and you think this is unnecessary for this context, why don't we just use a structured document?

It can be really awkward to navigate these boards especially if they've not been structured, can be way more time consuming
priyanca.bsky.social
Consider the experience if you listened to the content via a screen reader or text reader.

Would it make sense?

Does the meaning change if the text is read in a different order?

Is it even structured in a way that enables people to consume and understand the info via a screen reader?

Ironic if we are aiming to design inclusive experiences but don't apply this thinking to how we work within our teams, what tools are used.

Could I use this tool keyboard only (no mouse)?

"Could that whiteboarding session have been a document?"

For years designers have known that what we design should be accessible. But what about how we design it? Shouldn’t that be accessible, too?

It rained heavily. I love how the raindrops glitter on the leaves in the forest. Something quite transient and special seeing fresh raindrops on leaves
