BBC4 is repeating Bryan Magee’s 1987 series, The Great Philosophers, and I introduce it next Monday 13th at 22.30. I remember being very impressed when it went out that my wonderful PhD supervisor, Myles Burnyeat, was in the very first episode!

Sick and tired of people wanting to defend “western civilisation” especially when they are also attacking arts and humanities in the universities.

This was a really enjoyable discussion, with excellent questions. @philosophybites.bsky.social & @blackwelloxford.bsky.social are to be congratulated on the Philosophy in the Bookshop series - the audience included folk from Dorset, Manchester & Northampton who had all made the trip specially.

Peter Feaver, a political scientist at Duke University, said the military “managed well a very difficult walk along a high wire” by listening respectfully to partisan speeches from President Trump and Pete Hegseth without responding.
Military leaders absorb highly partisan presentation from Trump, Hegseth
The unusual, hastily organized event became a forum for the president to tout his political agenda while his defense secretary lectured the brass on standards.

Really enjoyed taking part this morning in the UK Civil Service Policy Profession Policy Festival: an online panel discussion about better to enable civil servants to adhere to - and celebrate - the civil service code.

With attacks on speedboats in the Caribbean Sea, President Trump has ordered the summary execution of people who may not have committed the crime of which he accused them, the editorial board says. “It is a violation of legal due process that should alarm all Americans.”
Opinion | No President Should Have This Kind of Power
Even if the allegations are correct, blowing up the boats is a lawless exercise in the use of deadly force.

Just returned from filming in a studio off Brick Lane. It’s a vibrant, friendly, cheerily multicultural quarter of London with churches, mosques and synagogues. Georgian, Afghan and Japanese restaurants side by side in this short stretch. London is thriving with Sadiq Khan as Mayor.

Holed up with a humdinger of a cold. So poached quince with a little honey & sugar, vanilla pod, lemon zest, seeds of green cardamom & a few drops rose water. Very soothing to make & eat. And my home made spiced elderberry cordial also helping.
