New paper! led by Josh Dean “Old carbon routed from land to the atmosphere by global river systems”
doi.org/10.1038/s415...

#radiocarbon in #rivers reveals the age of CO2 they release to the atmosphere.

An active leak of old carbon from land.

The Matai’an landslide dam in eastern Taiwan has failed this afternoon (eos.org/thelandslide...), flooding Guangfu, about 15 km downstream focustaiwan.tw/society/2025.... Even in the middle of a typhoon, the resulting flood produced a detectable seismic signal at stations ~40 km away.
Seismic waveforms and power spectral density plots showing the signal of a landslide lake outburst flood. Planet satellite image from August 2025 of a large landslide blocking a river and creating a lake.

New Study in ES&T! Permafrost peatlands accumulate mercury from distant sources, but thaw causes collapse into wetter bogs and fens. Lauren Thompson shows that these bogs, and especially fens, become hotspots for mercury methylation, and potential downstream transport.

There's been a lot of (model-based) hype over the years about a "large Neoproterozoic DOC reservoir" that could have triggered the end of snowball earth and the proliferation of multi-cellular life. BUT here we show this was not the case. Instead, DOC levels were about 90% lower than today

Can we now stop saying that once suspended sediment returns to pre-event levels, then the system response is over? Great paper here with relevance to cascading hazards and landscape evolution.
