My 19-year-old cat Scooter is now so hard of hearing that I nicknamed him Def Tiny Leppard. But even if he could hear me, he wouldn't respond, because he doesn't get 80s pop-culture references. #cats #Caturday

My colleague & friend Richard Green raises good reason to NOT sign Trump’s compact: “the president “is a person who has not kept agreements for a very long time. If we are going to sell our soul, let’s not sell it to someone who is going to pull the football away.”

The only way the post below could be more LinkedInane is if it also used the word "humbled." Somehow, I resisted the urge to click "more."

Whenever someone says "learning to read Chinese characters must be difficult," I note how many logos sports fans memorize.

The way forward to protect academic freedom and scientific excellence: no university signs this, no university is given special treatment for the price of integrity

“No self-respecting university could ever accept something like this,” said Lee Bollinger, a First Amendment scholar and former Columbia University president. “Trying to protect conservative ideas against being ‘belittled’ — that’s about as violative of the First Amendment interests as you can get.”
Colleges weigh whether to sign onto Trump plan or forgo federal benefits
A new proposal from the Trump administration would give colleges funding advantages if they adopt conservative priorities.

Nutritional yeast is the ultra-healthy #food with the terrible name. I'm surprised someone hasn't branded their own line as "Nu-Ye." Then people would shorten it to "Ye"…

Never mind.

(Haven't heard of nutritional yeast? It's a topping not for baking: www.traderjoes.com/home/product...) #marketing

But have they taken responsibility for Aaron Rodgers?

Given that the British can't handle those nuances, I have sympathy for everyone else.

(BTW, I'm proud that I was able to read all those Chinese characters without having to Google Translate 'em!)

Glad to see that my insistence on distinguishing between "may" (with permission) and "might" (possibly will) is not just obsessive compulsion.

British sign reads "Please do not cycle in the gardens. You may injure a young child or elderly person." Sardonic comment reads "You can't cycle but you can injure people?! Bit fucked up..."

Very cool. Please share an update next week!
BTW, the first two weeks of school, I bring pens and paper to my classes, since I don't allow students to use their computers.

Gee, with an opening like this, how can I resist reading the entire message?

Note: my ire is with the saps who actually respond to obvious spammers like this and do business with them.
Spam email with badly capitalized subject line, "executive Officer," a repeated salutation, "Hey Freddy Hey Freddy," and an offer to help my company "strengthen its brand image."

Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chermerinsky weighs in on Trump's Compact With Universities. How scary is this?

Quote: I’ve seen a copy of the compact and note that it would violate the First Amendment in another way: requiring universities to have policies prohibiting “all university employees, in their capacity as university representatives,” to abstain from “actions or speech relating to societal and political events except in cases in which external events have a direct impact upon the university.” It would be hard to come up with a more explicit attempt to restrict freedom of speech.

USC dropped Blackboard two years ago, and is now utilizing a customized version of Brightspace. It's somewhat better.

That caught my eye, as well, so I had to look it up. Not sure whether I'm disappointed or relieved that there's no mention of a Henson movie or TV series featuring Monsters Cereal characters, though I bet someone has it on a drawing board. (And, yes, I would watch.)
