That's a fair point. I, perhaps, don't see as much daylight between "intellectual" and "intellectually challenging" as you do.

But isn’t that effectively how you described literary fiction as intellectually challenging? I guess it depends then on what is considered to be “high-brow fiction.”

I’m not sure I agree with you on this one. I look at people like R. F. Kuang, or Zadie Smith among others doing what you’re describing. They’re certainly intellectually stimulating & challenging. But it’s true that many of the best contemporary writers utilize elements of other genres in their work
