According to the Wall St Journal, Trump ordered the Epstein cover-up because he was afraid his "friends" would be hurt by the release.

The information he saw about himself was so damaging that he wanted to tell the public it had been "doctored."

The problem with this is that by that point in Spring 2025 he had already been briefed by the FBI and DOJ on the number and nature of his appearances in the Epstein Files, so if he was still concerned about the way(s) his name appeared in the Files—to the point that he was prepared to lie to American voters and claim without evidence that the Epstein Files must have been “doctored”—it means that the references to him in the Files that he covered up via a direct presidential order to the FBI and DOJ must have been excruciatingly bad. WSJ: But behind the scenes, Trump was—as he issued that order—“telling aides he was worried some of his friends might be mentioned in the files,” meaning that his order to the FBI and DOJ to block all future Epstein File releases was, and by his own admission, significantly motivated by a desire to protect his friends from disclosures about their involvement with Epstein.
