Can we agree that the show that will be staged next week in Russia should not be referred to as an “election?”

Can I resubmit the original long version of an already published piece? 🤔
IO has revised its policies regarding word limits: we no longer include references/works cited as part of the word count.

Just read the sad news of Prof. Helga Haftendorn’s death shortly after her 90th birthday. A former President of the ISA, she was a towering figure in German IR, a long-time confidant and supporter of my career. A great transatlanticist, she trained generations of academics and policy-makers. RIP!

My experience tracks with @erikvoeten.bsky.social . Students have been very respectful but realize they lack perspective and a vocabulary to discuss the nuances, dilemmas and paradoxes exposed by the crisis. It is our responsibility to work through these with them.
Yes. All my class discussions have been extremely civil even if students visibly disagreed. And they have often been about better understanding the legal, historical, and political context rather than blame attribution.
What if universities are having civil, nuanced discussions of events in Israel and Gaza, but they are happening in classrooms, office hours, and dorms, not out in the public view of lazy reporters and not in a way that fits the narrative people want to tell?

As in recent 🇩🇪 state elections, the green parties were the big losers in this weekend’s 🇨🇭elections, not because people deny the immediacy of the climate crisis but because in both, the greens are increasingly seen as eliitist and paternalistic purveyors of privation. Time to recalibrate.
