New twist on diversionary war theory.
“A diplomatic source said: 'The generals think Trump's Greenland plan is crazy and illegal. So they are trying to deflect him with other major military operations. They say it's like dealing with a five-year-old'.”

what the fuck

one net effect of this will just be to make life a little harder for Americans in ways, they can’t quite put their finger on, because some of these organizations do the invisible work of multilateralism that enables contemporary life; another will be to hold up progress on most shared global goal…

Our strategy hinges on immiserating Venezuela.

If there's anything we know from the Iraq sanctions experience, it's that regime elites find ways to insulate themselves and it's ordinary people who suffer.

Yes, this. Denmark is a loyal ally that has fought by our side. If the administration can't address its security interests through negotiations with a friendly nation, then they are lousy diplomats.
What is just crazy about this, aside from the need for this statement at all, is that Greenland already IS in the US sphere of influence. It's far cheaper for the US, in material, security, and reputational terms, to have Denmark continue administering Greenland and work within NATO on security.
Joint Statement of major EU/NATO countries on Greenland, together with Denmark:

At the risk of disagreeing with the wonderful @profsaunders.bsky.social, I think the Venezuela operation shows that while the president is largely unconstrained in deciding whether to use force, he is constrained when it comes to scope and scale. 1/6
The foreign policy of a personalist dictatorship. There are no constraints.
Trump in a single gaggle on Air Force One just threatened:

-- a second strike against Venezuela
-- Cuba
-- Mexico
-- Colombia
-- Iran
-- Greenland (which in turn would be an attack on the EU and Denmark)

🧵Day 3 and we have a new meaning for "running Venezuela," courtesy of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the nation's top diplomat, who is in charge of Venezuela as well as the National Archives. We're going to insist they do what's in the US national interest. Time for some principal-agent theory. 1/

Apropos current events, I want to tout this paper by @soyounglee.bsky.social showing that discussion of economic benefits can reduce public support for military action. People are skeptical when they think specific groups (e.g., oil companies) will benefit.

I can’t believe we need this reminder in 2026, but countries have sovereignty over their natural resources.

So we’re not doing Iraq 2003. Instead, we’re doing Iraq 1991-2002. Wonder how that went?
A former staffer said that U.S. officials would not be performing a formal occupation like in Iraq. “We’re going to tell them: ‘Hey, this is what you have to do in order for there not to be another strike. That’s what [Trump] sees as running the country.” www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...
